As some may remember i am just back to work after a year off and back sergery.

So this weekend ive been feeling odd, and past few weeks run down stress i guess lol..

missed brands track day last fri as was having chest xrays in hosp, coughing up blood is bad i was told... felt ok though........

So this morn i popped to the doctors after my first job.

I sit in the seat and tell her, i have pains in fingers/tips, bones behind my ears are real soar, and i have blister type things on top of my head... im not one that ever had spots (lucky me i guess)

thought all things unrelated.

She checks me over and then pulls a sick note out im signed off, but i feel like im ok to work just a bad cold or somthing, i say i cant be off id rather work... to which she replies you have shingles..... How on earth have i got that! so add that to bleeding lungs... happy fecking day to me....

I feel ok like i could be working but im not allowed due to blah blah blah... shingles i thought was adult chicken pox but ive had that already..... i like my job.... this sucks

thats bad news m8, takes a long time to fully recover from shingles, took my mum about 5 months I think although its not something that will stop you working for that long it will certainly keep you from feeling your best.

That's such a bummer Jon, just when all seemed to be back on track. If you didn't know its a virus, basically when you get chicken pox it never really goes away and remains in the nerves around the spine and can be reactivated when you immune system gets a bit of a knock from illness, stress etc much like the cold sores people get around their mouth. You can't catch shingles but anyone who has not had chicken pox can catch that.
Just take it easy man.
Doc J ;-).

Kenobi that was funny.

Shingles is chicken pox infecting one particular skin nerve. It goes like this you get chicken pox your body kills the virus but some of it hides in the cell nucleus of a skin nerve.

It stays there doing no harm then for some reason we dont understand, but usually when your run down or chicken pox is around in the community, it reactivates comes out of the nucleus and tricks the cells production line into making more copies of itself. These then pass down the nerve to which ever bit of skin that nerve supplies and produces a localised rash of chicken pox.

Anyone who has had chicken pox can get shingles and you do see cases in kids.

As its a skin nerve thats infected and irritated it can be very painful and the pain can persist after the body has killed the virus again. On the plus side its the only virus we can kill. A drug called Famciclovir 750mg tab one a day for a week is my favourite version.

I tend to use it as you cant tell how bad its going to get and it does reduce the risk of the ongoing pain, however the 7 tabs cost the NHS £150 so other docs might feel it will get better and its not worth the cost (unless they had it ofcourse!)

The virus does go around your body and make you feel crap especialy if it infects your brain. So that could explain a lot. I would ring your doc and ask very politely if you could have the treatment, you might mention that you are at a low ebb having just recovered from major surgery etc

Hope that helps

Stick with it JRP :agree: :) Realising being at home for a long period of time can get people down, it's not just the physical side of things, you'll be ok you've got people visiting you doing the project

Probably best to listen to your doctor but as Rus said nobody knows why you get it but its seems to be linked to a llow immune system losing control of the virus.

Aciclovir is fine will do the job. The virus is only in the rash so your not contagious assuming nobody licks your rash. :p
