Morning peeps I'm thinking of buying a clio sport 172, does anyone know what I should look for other than the ussual? Also, are they easily clocked as I'm having difficulty finding one with all its MOT's and full service thanks in advance :agree:

Check the basics...

Drive it, does it knock when chaging gear? (Thats common- Engine mounts need replacing... even then sometimes it happens, its the manifold hitting the bulk head when changing gear whilst under harsh acceloration)

Also check to crunching in 2nd, or 3rd gear... the gearbox have been known as a chocolate gear box...but does depend on the driver.

Check that belts have been changed as there a b*tch to do and often cost £500-£1000 to replace...

Other than that the engine is just a 2.0i N/A engine so even 120k on the clock should still be good and last upto 150-200k but be pre pared for a rebuild... or replacement.

2nd hand parts are coming more available due to the amount of these cars eing brought from £1500 onwards and there fore being written of by the young chav's.

Also i would prefer the ph1 type... not much difference except there often alot cheaper than the ph2... same car really just different shape.

I would avoid the Y reg ph1 as they are in the higher tax bracket... but pre 2001 cars are in the cheaper tax code...

Its all upto you, dont buy a sh*tter if something dont feel right about the car walk away.

Be ready for it to be about half as exciting to drive as the GTT... ah, tbf, it's cool, just a very different experience.

I drove a decent Ph2 in Australia. I can see the appeal.

Standard Ph1 in silver with the OZ style wheels would get my vote.

depends what you want from a clio really, does he want luxuries? 4k will get you a very clean early model or a mid-high millage later one. frsh isnt needed as long as the aux and cambelt have been done ull be ok, the engines themself are quite bullet proof, he needs to drive a few tho as there is quite a variation in the range as to the power, for some reason it seems that renault threw them together, theres some very strong ones out there and also some weak ones

Thanks for the advice peeps, ive got a 172 now. The oil is clean and the guy I brought it off, said he had it seviced a few days before I purchased the car. Trouble is the service light has since come on but goes off sometimes.
Does anyone know if the service light comes on after a specific amount of mileage and just needs to be reset? or is it something that needs to be sorted

the service light normally means its slightly low on oil or the oil sensor is on the blink best thing to do is check the level of oil if this is ok pop down to reno and order a new sensor there not a huge job to change

service light can be many things on the clios, seatbelt tentioners, lambdas, coil packs will all turn it on. lumpy idle is normal tho unless its excessive, the engine has a funny idle setup to pass euro emisions tests so there all lumpy, later fly by wire models are worse tho. my 53 plate cup had a running problem tho that caused the service light to come on intermitently, ended up having all the coil packs and injectors changed

have a gander for some eibach prolines or if you wanna go a tad lower some eibach sportlines. seem to get the best review on the renault sport forums i've visited. i've fitted sportlines to my 172 and its definately got my vote for handling:cool:

you would be suprised but it does help it handle better as it stiffens up the suspension thus reducing it rolling when hitting a corner hard trust me im a member of cliosport and theres tonnes of debates on which ones are better
