Think this is the only thing I can add to my car for performance wise now on the C1J engine...worth fitting?

Not really worth the hassle is it ?
You'll have to pull the lump ..Might as well balance the whole rotating assembly while you're at it but I think it's chasing a very small gain ...if any .

I perosnaly coming from a Impreza Back ground think i noticed any difference, 450Bhp Impreza mind it was quick but all i noticed was a judder :) oh and stalling a lot at the lights

If the engine is out do it if not wait. As said, you need to match the different parts of the buttom end.

clee and andyrg have experience with cars that have ALOT more torque than the lowly 1397cc low comp engine. so yes a lightened flywheel will make a large difference to the C1J lump. - it will rev up alot quicker than standard.

I also think the std C1J flywheel is particularly heavy in the first place. I also think that CTM are the most trusted source for lightened flywheels if you go down that route.

Being a bit careful here, but who did/does all CTM's lightening?

is the ring gear on a clj flywheel removeable?

i have a ctm l/b slotted fly wheel but the monkey who fited the starter put the dowl in the wrong place and the teeth ar all slightly screwed.

yes it is

for the price of a replacement and fiting is it worth the cost?

I'm not sure but there was some info on another thread. I was under the impression that they did the machining for a lot of other places? I don't know for sure and could have confused it the other way round?

I did a search a found this:

http://www.rtoc.org/boards/showthread.php?t=5203&highlight=slot+flywheel

which indeed suggests that Large James is da man. Don't be modest Jim. I was saying that the flywheels supplied by CTM are trusted items and that in turn means you did the work, then the compliment is aimed at you!;)

Standard flywheel weight is near 6kgs from memory, I think after Jims lightened it, the weight drops down to near 3.5kgs.

Quite a difference and definetly noticeable when installed!!

As Sparkie says, reducing the rotating mass of the flywheel makes a massive difference to the engine speed and response.

I would pull the engine out to fit one, 3hr job tops :agree:

I have a ctm 9 slot 3.6kg flywheel. Good bit of kit, makes the engine rev a bit better with no major side effects over stock.

Personally i wouldnt pull the engine out just to fit it, do it as & when the engine needs to be removed.

ctm flywheel all the way, with ctm you can have lightend and refaced on your o e flywheel about £90 plus delivery or slotted for around 130 plus delivery, just sent one off to them for a fiesta rs turbo/mk1 fiesta conversion im doing, there top guys at ctm. highly recommended, the flywheels need to be spot on balanced so no point paying for a cheap one, best of getting the crank balanced at same time if engines out. they spin them on a machine

ctm flywheel all the way

As they said, send them direct to Big Jim Racing now as he and only he did them ALL for CTM.

The slotted flywheel for the 5GTT was all his idea / doing. Back in maybe 1999 I had one of the earliest very light ones, six slots then, 3.66kg, as he / we 'experimented' with my 5GTT's engine parts.

He was supplying a few tuners both directly and via CTM and got to the 9 slot which again for me was lighter and thinner than for customers as he didn't want to take a risk with them.

You could send in your clutch cover plate to be balanced at the same time.

It is a good idea to have the crank balanced with the flywheel and clutch, even though they are all balanced in their own right, I think I may be right in saying that unless the fit of the flywheel onto the crank is (centred) perfect there maybe a very slight imbalance, same with the cover plate. So an overall balance can stop that. It's probably very minor though.
