Rad weld

iv recentley changed my radiatior as it was shot and all my hoses seem to be good, but i am still getting a couple of spots of coolent after pulling up and leaving a board under the car overnight.

It could be possible the rad Has a slight leak, wat are if any the dis-advantages of using "RAD WELD"

Would you use it.

Rad weld is an emergency only solution for the 5. It will stop small leaks but will clog the waterways, like fat in an artery. When I got my 5 it had rad weld in it and all it did was constantly overheat!

Was the replacement rad a new one or a 2nd hand one? If it's new, is it a copper cored one or an OE item?

If it's new and OE then it's unlikely that there's a leak, but it has happened to folk.

Not many here would advocate the use of Rad Weld. Better to persevere and try and ascertain where the leak is coming from. IMO.

Ram a cork up your japs's eye and try and take a piss, that's what your coolant sytem will feel like with radweld in it....Heh!

Get it pressure tested.

looks like i wont be using rad weld then. It is a brand new copper core radiator so it shouldnt be leaking but is a possibilty, it would have eliminated the radiator if i could have used it as i cant seem to find the leak anywhere in any of the hoses.

I will be able to have a better look the weekend as its too dark wen i get back from work, i was just seeing wat peoples thorts were on rad weld.

Hopefully its just a hose or the clip securing the hose.

copper cores are well known for leaking, standard rad is the way forward

i had a brand new coper core one split between the oil and water ways, worth checking it out, gsf replaced mine no questions asked

mine is also from gsf, wat do you mean it split between the water and oil lines, where did you notice the leak was coming from as i havent seen any sign of where its coming from but will definatley have a better look the wek end.

2 good rules of thumb already mentioned in this thread - Never ever use RadWeld on these engines, and a standard rad' is the way forward.

well i did that b4 i changed the rad and it made it alot worse and dont really wana be doing that.

I will see how i go the weekend and give an update to where i stand.

The barsteward thing i was hoping the leak would have gone after chanhing the rad.

Yeah, but thats the idea, so you can see where the leak is, :laugh:
Seriously though as Ricardo says pressurize the water system, this will save you alot of time.

I hate rad weld ! Altough it dose earn me lots of money :laugh: :laugh: :laugh: saying that i hate copper core rads to :wasntme: :wasntme: Go for a alloy rad, Great for heat transfer and they look good aswell !

will one of these fit with a front mount intercooler and wat about fans as they dont come with one and also how about your oil lines does that mean i would hace to buy an oil cooler too.

Mate, pay a little extra and try and find a valeo rad for the 5 then you wont have to worry about seperate oil coolers and all that malarky!

Yes if you fit one of those alloy rads you will need an external oil cooler too, you can use your original rad on it.
If you don't want to go with the expense of an oil cooler then i'd go standard all day, more than up to the job at any state of tune that your engine maybe.
