View Full Version : wont boost properly in 3rd 4th 5th
right got all the hose's sorted on the gt today took it for a drive to see if it would boost properly now i've got rid off all the horrible sloppy ford boost hose's.
but it doesnt! we took it out, boost's fine in first and second, but in third it hesiitates when it gets to about 3.5k, once or twice it boosted fine but most of the time it doesnt!
where do i start?
could be moisture under the dizzy cap, maybe crap in the fuel filter in the carb
what psi boost are you running???
I had the same problem a while ago and it was down to the pipe that goes to the fuel pressure reg was split. It's on the drivers side of the carb and then goes doen next to the drivers side suspension turret
15psi ish, car had been sitting for a while before i bought it (8 months ish)
if i start taking the carb apart do i need to buy any gaskets or anything?

Right!
In this picture on the the left hand side of the carb top You can see a blue pipe that tee's into a black pipe and then runs off down the the suspension turret!
Midge, ya dont have to take your carb apart to have a look at the fuel filter inside the carb, just pull the fuel hose off the nipple that goes to the drivers side of the carb, then undo the nipple and carefully unscrew it out. The filter will be inside this nipple, have a look at that first and make sure its not caked in sh1t
cheers lads, ill try them things when im next at the car (its at a mates)
this is a pic off the pay, the blue hose in the pic posted is the red one i have i guess, it just disapears? where can the reg be found?

looks like the fuel pressure reg isnt even connected to anything
also, slip a thermostat in there :D

Disconnect the knock sensor and see if that makes any difference.....
As said already it'll probably be fuel pressure regulator related, and not the carb's fault. You need to make sure the pump is upto the job, make sure that the lines are not blocked or restricted. I can't tell which clio you have, but some of the newer shapes had some sort of funny diverter valve in the fuel line at the back, under the car near the filter. I had one guy that couldn't get any fuel pressure no matter what he did, the diverter valve was sending it all back to the tank. It was possible to just re-jig the pipework under the car to get rid of it. Failing that, make sure the reference pipe from carburettor is connected to the top of the fuel pressure regulator with no leaks, etc.
The red pipe that comes up on the left hand side of your carb needs to be plumbed into the carb top! not the accelerator pump just leave that with no pipe on! :)
hang on, the red pipe is connected direct to the accelerator pump nipple, that should be connected to a boost reference point preferably on the carb top.
disconnect the blue pipe that is blocking the carb top ports...
directly beneath the left hand port as you look at the picture now, is a red silicone hose, diameter looks close to 8ish mm...remove that red pipe and connect it to this carb port.
you can block the other carb port.
im hoping this makes sense...

Mate whats the yellow water pipe with the bleed nipple in it attached too? Looks like its just been blocked off
spooky = hawk eyes, well done :)
its a j reg 16v that was built by torsion tuning a few years ago (demo car im led to believe) it had alot off stuff stolen from under bonnet a few owners down the line and now i have it!
in the below pic am i reght in thinking i am ment to connect the red hose to where the green line goes, then block up 'A' and 'B' ?
http://i2.photobucket.com/albums/y48/52egdim/gttt.jpg
The yellow hose was plugged yes (wasnt driven like that, it was trialored to me!)
it now has all the correct water hose's and boost hose's/intercooler :)
cheers scoff, amazing what looks normal to some people and doesnt to others...unless they know what they are looking at :)
i would like to spend a few hours on this car to get it upto shape i think :D

:agree: same here mate, few things don't look right.
Thats cool mate, least the correct water pipe are on now ;) Just didn't like the look of that.
For your daigram mate, block off right side of carb top, run ref line to regulator on left side of carb top and leave A to atmosphere (not blocked)
so what ive done in the picture is correct except A is to be left open?
your all welcome to come and spend some hours onit!
hopefully once the red hose is done it will work correctly (and a clutch cable) :)
if anyne can spot anything else i'd be greatfull (remember all the water hose's are now correct!)

Ah sorry mate i'll correct what i said, yeah lefthand side of carb top is ok to do that. Right hand side couldn't see why it was drawn so long, if you just block the carb outlet off it will be fine ;)
You can just move the ref pipe from the reg to the carb top, no need to fit a T-Piece in to it the run line to acc pump jet diaphram but if you did then no harm as thats how it was from factory

Just what I was tring to put into words! :agree:
Don't leave the accelerator pump jet port 'open', atleast have a vac pipe pointing away and down to the floor if it's not going to be connected to the carb top.
Usually on the Clio GTT conversions I've seen the fpr is bolted to the drivers side damper housing :)

leave it to atmosphere if the seals good, its the dorris mod ;-p
changed the vacuum around and the car runs and goes spot on! its very quick! problem now is the clutch is ****ed, i thought it was the clutch cable being stretched but i changed it and it still wont release properly, ive put the car on ebay for the price it now owes me, if it doesnt sell ill do the clutch, but right now i want to get my 16v turbo done.
