my campus is running very rich at idle. the exhaust smells of fuel and the engine is cutting out because of it. it failed the MOT on excessive carbon monoxide content at idle and fast idle. and ideas what i should check? it firing on all 4 aswell.

What year is it? i presume its efi? single point

its a 1994, single point injection. the ecu has been changed but made no differance by the previous owner.

should be closed loop once its warm, probably coolant temp sensor. might be an idea to check the engine earths and connections to coolant temp sensor.

excellent thanks, i will check them tommorow.
i had the same problem on my campus, even after changing the ecu, injector, all the sensors in the end we found the cat was shot, fortunatly i got my gtt a month before the mot ran out

is there a sensor in the cat then?

not in the cat no. before the cat there will be an oxygen sensor. what where your emission readings?

i only got the fail sheet with the car and no emission readings. its certainly rich though.

i removed the top of the airbox and the butterfly is being smotherd in fuel, im suprised its even running. i removed the plug to the cooland sensor and the engine was no differant with it on or off, so does this point to a failed sensor?

i have changed the sensor in the water pump finally as i had trouble getting a new one. it seemed to make the car better but when it gets to temp it cups out. i removed the plugs and they look rough, badly gapped and black as hell. so im going to get a new set and go from there. what plugs does this take as it has ngk super 4's and im sure they used champions but not sure which ones.

shoud be a sticker on rocker cover, :)u can check all the sensors if u record the resistances(digital ohm meter) hot and cold, some work the opposite way but they should change!dont forget the inlet manifold one for air temp

how do i test the sensor using an ohm meter. what setting do i need to put the meter onto and do i put the probes on both ports on the sensor with the engine running when cold and again when hot?
this is the meter i have, is it the right one?

yes, as for you meter there is not a key on my pc that matchs the sign !
Depending how the sensor works you will see the numbers on the meter go up or go down, but they should change from when the car is cold to hot.

cool thanks, i take it that if the meter shows no fluctuation then the sensor is faulty? will i find what sensor should read what in the haynes?

Sensor should be unpluged and probe the sensor not the loom, if your doing a resistance(ohms) any voltage will afect the reading or damage the meter.
temp sensors are usually a negative co-efficient, so as temp rises resistance should drop. usually resistance increases in metals as temp goes up. either way u should have continuity and a reading that changes gradually as temp changes. fuel does poor on to the butterfly as it idles in single point injection. looks weird but its prob not the injector. Check your engine earths too,bad connections or snapped maybe?

right i fitted new plugs and the car ran great, then once up to temp it cuts out, it struggles to restart and then when it does fire up it immediatly cuts out, when its cold it runs ok. when it does cut out i can hear the stepper motor clicking around 3 times. is this normal? i cant do a co2 reading as it wont idle but i think i have cured the over fueling issue but now its cutting out.
Could be a problem with the single point injection body. I think i have a complete one in the garage that came off a running 1.4 M plate campus if you need it. Got a ecu too.
Sounds like its too weak now? Overfueling could of killed the lamba sender dead!

i forgot to add when i do get it started when its hot it runs but very rough, but as soon as i touch the throttle it cuts out and the stepper motor starts clicking.
mmmmmmmmmmmmm. found that throttle body assembley and its got the lamba sensor there too. Not got a air leak on a vacuum anywhere has it?

i was advised this earlyer im glad it came up again. i will check over that next. so far i only checked the pipe from the carb to the aei but there are plenty more to go over next.

if i remove the vacum pipe from the carbon canister the car will run but when i refit it the car stalls. any ideas chaps?

Did you remove the pipe and block it or did you just let it breathe air through it? not sure on the canistor set up on this but it should be electronically controlled, check if the solenoid that operates it is working, or if there is any kind of one way valve make sure its working one way and not the other. Difficult to say without actually looking at the engine :crap:
