hi could anyone tell me what the plate on the passenger side of the head is for?? on mine it is totally blanked off but just seen a pic of a head on this thread and it has a pipe coming from it and a some kind of sensor, what is it for?should mine be totally blanked???

Nothing, on the OE setup its just a blanking plate. Some people drill and tap fittings into it for water temp gauges, etc as the water jacket is behind the plate

ah ok thanks but why does the guy have a pipe coming out??
Standard its blanked off, I think it was originally for somit on a model from the mk1 range.
I personally have a coolant temp sensor in the plate on mine so the ecu can see what its sitting at, I've heard of others routing part of the coolant system through the plate, dunno where to connect to though.

it looks like he has an electric water pump.

Nah the stock head gets the water through the water pump before it goes through the block
damn thought it was for the twin water pump setup driven from the flywheel ring gear................:scratch:..................... .................................................. ...........................

can i correct you there jaffa /. the water pump at that end of the head was driven by the camshaft not the crank
