View Full Version : my 306 dirty derv project

Well as my 205 and r5 are both at the bodyshops i got very bored..

my saxo 1.1 runabout was soo dull and i sold it for over double what i paid.

Then a friend offered me a 306 with a fresh mot, 5 months tax and a dodgy charging problem.

one alternator later and its been a good run about car :).

As ive only really ever owned what i consider pretty classic french cars that deserve a certain amount of respect ive not really had a chance to abuse a car for the sheer fun of it... therefore this 306 will be a toy of my reckoning. Ive never lowered a torsion bar so the first thing it got was that..

Ive also upped fueling on the boost compensator, and the main fueling and also tuned the turbo to now hold 18 psi rather than the stock 12/13. The car still wants some more fuel so i will look at that tomorrow.

Bodywork wise i will refurb a set of 1.9 205 gti alloys, fit a new bonnet and wing and all being well get the car painted.

Anyway folks enjoy, #

btw i do have the 4 alloy but the previous owner managed to fubar the tyre.

Check out the 306 forum, there is a guide on how to up the fuel on there, also there are a few vids. on youtube on how to do it, (both types of turbo and delivery pumps) makes a lot of difference! My old chugger went quite well after mucking about with it.....

03-01-2010, 10:22
yea man, i found a few guides on the net..

which forum is best for them ?, on on 205 gti drivers, pug sport, i found club 306 but its paid membership only ...

i used to use http://www.pug306.net/ however its a free site and has some of the downfalls of 106owners with the 17 year olds wanting to do 200mph in a 1.4 but other than that a good site.

Nice :agree: :D

I quite fancy one of those.

Been looking at a replacement for the 172 and I'm thinking maybe a 306d.

I know like you guys have mentioned they can be tweeked a bit for that added extra bite :smokin:

What are they like in terms of running costs etc?

djinuk
03-01-2010, 21:51
they are meant to be great mile churners mate however mine has a leak i think so not so good.

The engines are very reliable, if all pretty oily, and there are hundreds in scrapyards as the engines came in soo soo many cars, they also handle really nice, and drive very modern and comfy.

began getting it ready for paint, im only tackling the major dents as at the end of the day it is my runabout/work wagon , but here the prep begins..

I sorted a couple in the roof however the roof will be going mattblack as it has far to many dents to contend with.

rear 1/4 dent filled and roof, and scotched up ready for high build primer

high build primer

and then high build knocked back to 800grit

Looks like a good car for a run about:agree: Couple of tips. Try not to put filler over paint, knock it back to the metal first. Little dents are o.k. Dont paint up to the tape edges, its a ******* to flat and if it were a gloss finish metallic or straight gloss you would see the line no matter how well to flat thee edge away. Also go easy on the primer try not to rub it all off;)

djinuk
05-02-2010, 11:00
yea i learnt the lession of spraying upto the tape, luckily the roofs going matt..

The 1/4 isnt perfect but a lot better than it was, be ok for the workhorse though.

im using a reall bright 2k white gloss, yea i tried to go easy with the high build but it didnt come out the gun the best due to the low air pressure so i had to flat quite a bit off.

cheers for the advice :)

Little bit of an update, theres been a few changes of plans , simply as it looks like my r5 isnt far away and thers some more involved plans for that so therefore i need to get this car ready and looking presentable ready to tow its ass around..

The new plans regards styling requires the removal of the bumpstrips, somthing i really didnt plan for originally.

To lose the holes where the bumpstrips oringially went i played with the idea of welding them however i was worried that the heat my warp the thing panels , meaning it would be a nightmare to get straight, therefore i took the other option of using p40 bridging filler, this was a nightmare to apply, and meant the removal of doorscards etc, however even with that removed space was super super tight, however with a bit of effort my french hands managed it, so here we go.

http://i3.photobucket.com/albums/y98/djinuk/020120071242.jpg

this was then knocked back on the outside using 120 grade sand paper and i applied some filler to the one side, i can see it being quite a paint to filler however only time will tell.
http://i3.photobucket.com/albums/y98/djinuk/020120071243.jpg
http://i3.photobucket.com/albums/y98/djinuk/020120071244.jpg

please excuse the dodgy filler work, i though id apply as little as possible first to see what i could get away with.

Thats all i managed to get done this sunday , simply as the temptation to jump on the bike became to much.

well a bit bored of doing everybody elsese cars, and fed up of having runs in with the law simply as the car looked dodby being odd colors we decided to mission thec and get it finished..

up went the gazebo on saturday and we wet flatted and sprayed the rear 1/4
http://i3.photobucket.com/albums/y98/djinuk/120220071342.jpg

being a rattle can/celly the paint reacted very easilly , however we found giving it a few very very light dust coats to initially give it a key helped
http://i3.photobucket.com/albums/y98/djinuk/120220071343.jpg
http://i3.photobucket.com/albums/y98/djinuk/120220071346.jpg

http://i3.photobucket.com/albums/y98/djinuk/120220071341.jpg
also dropped a set of coilovers on it
http://i3.photobucket.com/albums/y98/djinuk/130220071348.jpg
http://i3.photobucket.com/albums/y98/djinuk/130220071351.jpg

many many hours of wet flatting the 2 wings and 2 doors. so i grabbed the local monkey to give me a hand.. (look at them eyes!!! are you scared)
http://i3.photobucket.com/albums/y98/djinuk/130220071350.jpg

some paint on a wing

http://i3.photobucket.com/albums/y98/djinuk/130220071349.jpg
http://i3.photobucket.com/albums/y98/djinuk/130220071352.jpg

then it all got a quick wash off
http://i3.photobucket.com/albums/y98/djinuk/130220071354.jpg
http://i3.photobucket.com/albums/y98/djinuk/130220071353.jpg

although theres still more bits i plan to do , i can only give this car a very small budget as i still have the r5 and 205 to finish which take up plenty of cash..

enjoy!

took out most of the heavy curbing from the cyclones, then fired up the compressor yesterday and gave them a coat of high build, i even started flatting one of them off yesterday.

well ive not had the best week/weekend and im not very well now, however before this i did manage to get some bits painted etc. Although the paint loooks very rough , once cured it went very clear, also the pics made the orange look peachy, but its definatly orange.. ill wet flat and polish the bits up once im better.

began preping the 306 for a fresh paint job..

Redid the smoothing on the bumper as there was some moisture trapped and it had caused some sinkage.. also just begain flatting some damage, once these repair are done ill flat the whole car ready for fresh :)

little bit of wet flatting on the original paint to 800 , and also sanded back the filler work i did before on the holes where the bump strips fitted, and dropped a little stopper in ready to flat back as these reairs had some light pin holing.

djinuk
19-10-2010, 07:43
going to avoid matt, its a bit of a pain especially with diesel smog, it engrains itself into the paint, and consdidering its not like you can polish it to remove crap its litrally a case of soapy water and elbow grease.

Gota keep wheels a bit longer yet, but i may consider repainting if i get bored and have some spare paint kikin about.

ok , ill get the jargon out the way.. full resprays are harrrd work.. also i was always told you will find a certain paint setup that suits you and now ive tried them all i can confirm that solvent basecoast and clearcoat is my fav... this paint was a 2k solid and i found no matter what gun settings/pressure the paint would not go on wet wet and give a nice shine.. hopefully it will flat and polish quite well.. in future i wont skimp on cheapo paint.. lesson learnt..

the paint has a shine, but also a texture, kind of eggshelly.. Im still 50/50 if i like it but as a training exercise for myself it was worth it and if anything i at least leartn 3 things.. how to mask propelly, not to use cheap paint, and that resprays are hard work and require good food to complete .

i think it'll look good once you get it refitted. :agree:

there's a white gti6 that parks down the road from my work, i think it looks the nuts and would be tempted by one if it wasn't so old, i'm a tart with a private plate, kinda annoys me as it really limits the cars i can have and keep my plate :(

good on you for doing the spraying yourself, it's something i've always wanted to try my hand at

cheers man.. its a lot of hard work but i keep in my mind that its a hobby,, if i make a few quid on the side it cuts down the cost of my hobby however it is a hobby and if i end up spending money so beit :)

some more pics of it back together.. the paint defects just about flat back but not everywhere.. my plan is to give it another blast in about a week or so, this time working out how to get a real real wet coat.. in the meantime i plan to flat back all the orange peel/microblisters etc.. then ill mask up lights windows etc and give this car a final couple of coats to give it shine.. This is now it stands.

hehe thanks. nah i dont work in a bodyshop, just taught myself and (going to sound really gay now) but find it quite relaxing in comparision to mechanics. The bodyshop the cars in there is just the guy who did the sills for me on the r5, he allows me to use his booth when hes not busy and in return i put few hours in helping him out etc.. Started the 306 at 7:00pm and finish at 2:30am.. to be honest the finish in them pics looks better than it is.. for some reason i struggled to get the paint to hit the surface wet and instead its very dry, if you run your hand over it its like a sponge (not smooth)..

All being well i plan mask it up again and just hit it with a couple of wet coats to make her shine.. thanks for the support though :)

and p.s the r5 will get 20x the amount of time this one gets :P

well removed my 1.9 dt engine for a super low milage one today.. having looked back i wouldnt of bothered, the job is a nightmare, have done so many tu3 engines 205, 106, saxo, renualt 5 turbo, 205 gti6.. this is by far the worse..

mainly the car anything plastic seems to brittle and just snaps, i snapped the clip that holes the bottom rad hose, and snapped the heater matrix hoses, the drivers side shaft was stuck solid in the mount, even now the engiens out i cant get it to shift, using heat, and hammers..

To get that shaft out you need to hit the inner collar with a drift, hit it hard it will come out eventually. My xantia has the same setup and my intermediate bearing was solid.

Update , and a bit of a strange one..

basically this car was oringinaly purchased as a run about to drive into the ground.. the truth is now... with silly fuel costs etc.. its a car with a low mileage engine, that runs on pretty much anything cheap , is comfortable and with these points in mind i decided to raise the back up to save it the sorrow and destorying the chassis on the back end..

Anyway i started the day with a new toy
http://i3.photobucket.com/albums/y98/djinuk/IMG_0086.jpg

and a before and after of the lowering
http://i3.photobucket.com/albums/y98/djinuk/IMG_0087.jpg
http://i3.photobucket.com/albums/y98/djinuk/IMG_0091.jpg

Once again struggled to get it on shiny, until i realised it really wants chucking on to get a gloss, anyway i did so , 3 mins later out came the Epic runs .. *cry*

Tomorrow im going to flat them back out and then i really dont know what, i may be lucky and manage to flat a couple without going through the paint.

On a positive note... they are shiny runs :D

bit of a better day today, managed to flat 90% of the runs , leaving only tiny pin prick marks on the worst, certainly didnt warrant any more paint considering its only really a bit of fun. The paint one again was very difficult to get to gloss up directly out the gun, basically the margin between runs and orange peel was a hair line, , i imagine the only way to get this stuff to look good is with a very heavy flat and polish, personal note , dont by this jawells solid paint, £92 5ltr of paint 2.5 hardener and 5 litres of thinners.. in future ill stick to the standox stuff , much easier to use, far less time consuming, i guess you learn. Anyway although the paint once again ended up very dry in places, i rubbed it down to 1200 and gave it a very quick buff up and fortunatly it did come up better (see pic of roof), i ended up repainting the bonnet this morning as the grey primer was showing slightly.

i was a paint sprayer for ten years and still do it in my spare time
and it takes years to master it keep going mate dont loose faith:)
your runs are in all the classic places for a begginer watch out when your over
lapping on the edge of your panels try not to go over it twice in one pass if you know
what i mean, and there is so many factors that can stop you from getting a shine straight from gun can list them all if you want, but also dont want to tell you how to suck eggs dont know how far down the learning path you are:p

nah i dont take offence dude.. its just strange because i was always scared by metalics , yada yada yada, sprayed them no problem, come to this "simple white " and its a nightmare..

I had 29 psi (correct pressure), i started at 5% thinners and went as high as 20, at first i was moving fast, however i found this was putting the paint down far to drive (like the first time) , so the second time i slowed down, and what i found was it went on a little like orange peel but what i would best describe as a non slip surface, like the air pressure was blowing the paint when it hit the panel. I didnt have the gas heat on as im cheap arse (broke) and cudnt afford the gas, so i kinda blame that for the runs, i think what made it very difficult is tht i was finding it hard to see the wet paint on the dry due to the colour, it made it very difficult to keep a good trace on where i had been and picking up the wet paint on large panels like the bonnet. Any pointers id be happy to hear buddy, unfortunatly when i use the booth for my own thing its always late at night, which means the boss isnt around and therefore i cant ask for on the spot pointers if that makes sence , all back yard and internet learning taught im afraid :).

And sparkie, if it does or it dosent, it sure does one thing, gets on your tits.

should'nt be going over 10% thinners 5% fine, the more thinner you add the more it speeds up the evaparation time which results in the paint dulling off, other factors for dulling off are

1 to fast a hardner
2 to higher a pressure on gun
3 spraying in cold
4 to much heat while spraying
5 soaking into primer
6 not allowing paint to flash of between coats
7 incorrect fan setting on gun
8 gun been held to far back from car
9 poor air movement
10 to high of grade sanding used on primer
11 to much material on car
12 use of aeorsal primer

i could go on and on and into detail but dont want to bore pants of you:)

hehe funny you say that last night we were discussing it..

I think chances are

Spraying in cold
to much material on the car, and for some reason my gun was playing up and wouldnt give me a wide spray pattern..

Next time hey :P

thanks though i take all advice in :)

indeed there is that.. although it comes up quite well with a very quick flat/polish, the geezer at bodyshop used a bit of paint to do a panel this morning and has had the same problem, he seems to think its just down to the paint being cheap jawel spec bull crap, i guess you buy cheap you get cheap.. In future ill stick to standox, had no issues spraying with that stuff :)

you can see in this pic, i grave the corner of the roof and rear 1/4 a very quick buff and it came up ok :)
