tdc sensor??

hi is there anyway to tell if my top dead sensor is standard or a retarted or advanced one just buy looking at one or will i have to put timing light on leads to see if its advanced or retarted??? thanks

If the sensor is sat in the middle of the gearbox cut out then its set to standard.
