View Full Version : info on diesel cars- 306 td
ok , i recently got hold of my first diesel car , a 306 1.9 td.
Ive gota say i love it, effortless to drive, a great mile cruncher etc etc..
the only thing im finding is it struggles on cold starts, usually taking 4/5 times of warming up them coils before it will eventually fire.
Forgive my innocence but is there anything in particular which would cause this or is a pretty normal for a old diesel.
probably wants new glow plugs :)

I'd say it sounds like it could do with some new glow plugs if the things taking that long to start.
you will need the special glow plug spanner.
good luck with the glow plug on cylinder number 1...no body changes it cos its a pig to get to. i managed to snap the water union next to it one of the times i did one.
happy days lol.. im a complete noob with diesels so this should be fun.. are glow plugs generally changed 4 at a time, and is it somthing worth salvaging off a 2nd hand motor or buying new.
You say special glow plug spanner ?..

Get some penetrating fluid involved to avoid snapping the *******s off in the head.:)
i got my glow plugs for my old diesel escort van from halfords, got them with my trade card from about 30 quid down to about 12 quid for all 4:)
New glow plugs should sort it.
Set aside 3 hrs to do it the two behind the derv pump are a nightmare. Buy decent beru glow plugs its a job you dont want to do again in a hurry;)
