Right I had an mot booked for h48 wec yesterday. Managed to get a few days off to work on the car, and things were going well. It got one advisory for passenger bottom balljoint, and failed on it's sills. the corrosion was deemed to close to the seat belt points. Anyways getting new sills put on but my questions are these

how do the bodykit sill covers come off?Im known for snapping things:ashamed:
what else do I need to dismantle from the car to get it ready for new sills
can new front and back jacking points be added at a later date without messing up the new sills?

For the 2 miles there and back from the mot, the car felt awesome, and behaved brilliantly, I feel in love again.

I think most sill covers are possibly rivetted to the body at the sill itself. So you may have to drill them out.

The sill cover is only sat on clips so it can pulled upwards and away from the body, it may help if you take the wheel arch trim off too :)

I know that feeling. My 21 got a thrashing about the village and industrial estate. Probably woke up Rons brother in Ellistown.

I just love the car. I would love to keep it. perhaps I should.

I paid the insurance up front no redeemable classic policy runs out July, now it mot'd till December 2010. Tax is all it needs.

Oh why do i feel so confused.

Cheers for that ifo spooky.:agree: what are the arch trims held on with, as you can tell I've not touched anything to do with body work on these cars, it's all just been mechanical related. Will I have to take carpet, wiring, seats out, for the sills to be welded, and like I said earlier can I weld new rigging points at a later date without messing up the new sill? Thanks in advance.

Arches are held on with screws/bolts. The screw is into the arch and then it bolts to the car with a nut. They WILL come out of the arch before the nut loosens so you might need to hacksaw them out then glue new bolts to the arch. Thats what I'm doing anyway :agree:

Oh and a rivet behind the rear light cluster.

dont be lazy, pull the front arch off if poss, if not the skirt will snap the front archs lowest fixing:disagree:

as said the mounts will snap on the archs, easy fix, threaded bar cut down with a hacksaw and glue'd in... add a plastic washer when bolting back on..:ho:

like motioned, just jack the car up no need to take wheels off, i did not, i think the arches were a 10ml, removed front and back, then the side skirts just clip in, i just lifted mine up and they came straight off.

15 mins per side should do it.

Just check to see if they have been stuck on with tiger seal first:rolleyes: When all the mounts snap its a quick fix that a lot of bodyshops do.

Right guys did this yesterday in the freezing snow. What a crap design. All the mounting holes cracked off and left the bolts securely fastened in the wings! So any one got any ideas how to get them out as there is a threaded bar with a washer on the outside of the wing 10mm bolt on the inside. These are clamped on with no room to get a little hacksaw behind the washer or bolt. Help! :(

carefull use with an anglegrinder maybe?

I really do hate r5 rear arches they they leave them bloody bolts behinds.

if there tight up against arch then you could try-wire brushing the nut on inside then spray a load of plus gas on nut...then mole grips on outside an socket on nut, hopefully they will undo!!!

or....hacksaw,masking tape over the wing area that the saw will rub against an take time!!!
or....use angle grinder an take the nut off from inside wing....

if you can get hold of some m5/20 bolts an nuts stainless!!!,you can drill out location in arch an then mount bolts in some fibreglass resin, top up an hey presto better than new!!!

The sills were finished on Christmas eve, and it passed it's mot. :agree:
The sills have been chopped in below the bodykit skirts so no repainting of the sides is needed. My question is this. What state do freshly welded sills from a bodyshop come like. I.e do they normaly come etch primered, welds treated? No idea about body work. :crap:

the new sills would be painted black but the welds would probably not be maybe primered all i did with my sills after replacing them was spray a rust replant paint on and stone chip them in inch thick spray all over as no need to paint them as covered by the sills :)
