Hellfire!, you mean there's more than one of the buggers?

What is/was happening before much exploding of pipes and losing of keys......................was that the idle speed kept creeping up........even though the throttle return spring seems to be working properly.........and my mate said he thought it could be a knackered diaphragm....................

or two maybe???????

Sounds like an air leak if the idle was creaping up

be careful. although the throttle spring might be working properly, sometimes there is a fraction of a degree of throttle movement that the carb spring is too weak to pull back on. - best off shortening it a bit to make it stronger and see if that sorts it out.
