When i purchased my j plate is came on a dechoked carb, the previous owner had removed the flap that opens/closes when the choke is engadged and dis engadged, and filled the hole. The car amazingly stills starts etc in most conditions easy enough but im just wondering does it actually offer any benefit?

I de-choked mine but left the cable and cam. This means you can still increase the revs but not richen up when cold. I don't think it makes alot of difference but it's something thats out of the way of the flow.
