Already Google'd it mate. It's well out of warranty, and I've long since misplaced the receipt/paperwork.

In laymans terms, what's the score? I'm a dab hand at electronics, but I know zilcho about xbox internals.

Before buying mine I read up on some of this, there's a few fixes on the web, vids on how to do it etc. The reclamp and thermal paste seems to be the main one but I'm yet to try it.

It's well over 3 years old mate.

Strangely enough, I've been playing mw2 & it's now failed.

Thanks for the link Andy. Not too keen on forking out a score for a load of nuts n' bolts! :D I'll take it into work tomorrow, re-paste it all for starters, then go from there.

Mine was one of the first ones that came out probably like yours mart if its over 3 years old and has suffered from the rings before. It might just start working again after its been left to cool down. Ive left mine for a couple of days before, rung microsoft to log it for being shipped of to be mended only for it to start working again. I should get it back out of the loft and try again:)

Fixed mine a few months back. You need to get rid of the ****e xclamps. You'll see why the chip fails when you remove the clamps. The only real fix is to reclamp the chips down and sweat them back in place.

Mine died in june, (got it on release day) but as I already upgraded the firmware thought id just give it a go myself with the xclamp fix kit from ebay. Worked a treat, been spot on since. Cost about 4quid for the kit.

Hi mart
I had this problem with mine and used the link of a thread I made a while back, hope this helps, you can buy all the bits from Maplins or similiar.
http://www.rtoc.org/boards/showthread.php?t=3460
mine lasted for 7 months, so from a personal point of view it served its purpose if not a lasting repair, although I could of done it again, I was given an xbox so didn't have the need.

Cheers Wrighty. I'll have a sniff of that video now & see what's what :agree: :)

The repair only lasted 7 months though?

Fecking Microsoft janky caaaants.

:D

Sam, did you use new paste?

Yes I did, The kit usually comes with the paste needed and I Just covered the ******* chips in it. You can see why they fail, the xclamps that hold the heatsinks on over time just start too weaken loosing the grip.

I know, nearly evey person I know has had this problem, I could of used the method again, but didn't want to go opening the xbox up for a second time ! it saved me buying another one for a few months, but this is going back a year when they were still very expensive. Not sure how much new xbox's go for now a days?

Sorted :agree:

I see what yous mean about those x-clamps :sad2: :crap:

Removed/binned them, removed the heatsinks, re-pasted the ic's, PMT'd the heatsink with the lower metal cover to give a greater surface area for cooling, ran the overheat shpiel to re-align/set the ic's, left the unit to cool down, and all is now good - No more rrod, even after running a dvd for a couple of hours.

Win!

Cheers for the advice chaps :agree:
