Could it be the imobiliser playing up? or ignition wiring ?

Check the solenoid cable hasn't come off

My moneys on this as this has happened to me a few times as it had an none oe connector end on it and they always seem to be a bit loose. Also this wire could of melted part of the way and so is not seeing a decent current.

yesterday, started from the top, battery and its terminals, power lead and earths. reground them so they fitted nice, started first time, tried it a few more times to see if it was a fluke and it worked great, best its ever been. got it home, tried it again no problems.
this mornin get in it to go to work, turned the key and it started and cut out like usual cold mornins, tried it again and nothin, back to square one, lights on ignition ok no noise from starter motor at all.

gona take a look on a ramp now, any other sugestions?

N/S front wing connector block under the header tank is a git sometimes, my starter on my old five had the same symptoms as yours, turned out -as others suggested- to be the white wire on the solenoid connector was loose, I cut the old one off, crimped on a new terminal and all was hunky dorey, might be worth a look. :)

maybe nowt to do with you problems at the moment, but unless you have one allready fitted, get yourself an oe starter heatshield.

wasnt a connector block there, bundle of wires and clip plate that holds the connector but nothin else. checked the white cable connectors and its fine as they were re-done when starter was fitted.

If you've got a test lamp or a multimeter, pull the solenoid wire off the starter and check for light/12volts when you turn the key to the start position. You might need a length of wire to make it easier.

This will narrow down where in the starting system the fault lies.
