View Full Version : 'Coupe' badges

Thought that may catch your eye.
Bit of a lost cause this one, unless somebody has deep pockets to invest in ittle return.

Spoke to a leading badge making company who can make exact copies of the coupe badge, from an original or two.

its £1500 in tooling, and then £20 a badge!
So £50 each if we order 50. haha

Thought i would post anyway, see what people say.

I would say yes at that price, but good luck getting the number's needed tho. :(

Sam Fish

We may be able to alk them down to £45.
Thats an exact copy, in alloy.

But numbers would be hard, although we could go global. Thats still a £2500 investment, for a badge!
Money would have to be put down blind too. Although These guys make for john cooper, land rover, aston etc.

Poeple may want to make thier car look like a coupe. Like people putting an 'M' badge on the back of thier 3-series BMW. non? Although thats a bit rank.

Well if there isnt the demand and somebody has one lying around, I need one! (wanted ad posted ;))

It seems there are more 'coupe cars' than badges.
Im only guessing there is demand, by the prices they go for, and the fact that they dont often sell openly.
Or Demand is there, but not enough to warrant the £1500 tooling!

My model train customer does metal castings as well .
I've not spoken to them in a while but need to get some more covers knocked up so if someone wants to send me a badge then I'll see what is possible

Yes, the 'coupes' were the race versions of the gt turbo, that were built to compete in the gt turbo cup series (the 80's version of the Clio cup that still runs today). Some info here:

There where some 'coupe' road cars too :)

We used to get one in the workshop in the 80's. It was doing 15,000 miles a year.
They had all the bits of the Race versions, but with the full interior (no roll cage). Not sure if they had the strut brace though. They also made some phase 2 'coupe' road cars too.

The genuine road ones must be rarer than the genuine race ones.
I have never seen a road 'coupe' myself, but seen plenty of (genuine) race ones.

Trevhib
28-06-2010, 13:36
Interesting. I don't ever remember anyone in RTOC mentioning/seeing/hearing about OE Semi-Cup cars built/registered/sold for the road.

The only way I can see this happening would be if there were a handful of specials for people who were connected to the race series, dealerships or Renault themselves. Surely there weren't any made available for general sale.

Do you remember if the one you saw regularly was RHD or LHD Sam?

Brigsy
28-06-2010, 13:41
Im sure col (the master) said some of the cup cars that werent raced/sold had the cage removed, interior fitted & sold as road cars??

As for the 'coupe' badges, i have seen resin copies for sale on ebay spain, look like a good copy & cheap.

Sam Fish
28-06-2010, 13:48
Hey.
Yeah, they where definately on 'General' sale. But very very very few.
this one that visited the workshop was RHD. My Dad says it was a phase 2 car too.

some of the french forums have pictures of them - and one sitting in a dealership; Coupe wheels and some graphics, but with a number plate :agree: :agree:
With the classic cup car stance /
I have been testing my GCSE french out!

It was a bit of a marketing exercise I suppose. Thats why the original racing cup car batch had VIN numbers - All the coupe's would have had VIN numbers, even the race ones.
If they didnt (like the 'RAD' radbourne stamped cars) they where reshells or build by the Radbourne team to begin with.

Somebody can correct me if Im wrong, but its what I have been piecing together.

Thats why it can be hard to determine an 'Original' coupe, because they wheren't just the 1st 450 cars off the production line, they made some later too.
APPARENTLY

Sam Fish
28-06-2010, 14:02

Here's some scans of my Renault 5 Launch Brochure dated 02/1985 showing the Racing Coupe before the GT Turbo was even launched.

Their is no mention in the borchure of a GT Turbo as the range stopped at the TSE.

You can clearly see this is the birth of the GT Turbo from the description but the writing says it is "Not avaliable for Road Use"

Looks like Renault released a few for road use to test the market for the GT Turbo.

Note the same plastic centre caps on the wheels as shown in Sam's picture above!

Sam Fish
28-06-2010, 14:41
Yeah, maybe they where to test the market like you say.
Or as a marketing device in the dealerships to link the racers to the road cars.

Trevhib
28-06-2010, 15:40
Very cool stuff :)

I can imagine there may have been a few like this put together and flogged. It's still difficult to believe they would do this outside of France or for general punters to pick up.

Also, they couldn't have been both pre-GTT market testers and then have been available in Ph2 though.

Can anyone decipher what it says on the number plate in that french car pic? Looks like - Coupe Renault 5 xxx Turbo 1985.

Can't work out what the letters are after the number 5. Looks a bit like TX. It's not GT.

Seen this pic before plus a load of other specials from rare scanned photos all in a fantastic thread on the old site. I forget which member it was who put them all up. Duncan? Steve? There was a dark metallic green special with GTT-style leather trimmed seats. I can't remember which company it was advertising..... Hold on a minute, it was in that thread that we could see a red 5 'coupe' (badged) in a French dealership but that one didn't have graphics on it from memory. Basically a Ph1 GTT on cup steels. I wonder how much other cup stuff it had on it. :agree:

It also says it has the coupe deCarbon dampers etc. It also has the coupe boost hose that doesnt need blanking off.

Colin told me, that back in the 80's, when you bought a coupe from Renault London (where they were all sold from), it didn't come with all the coupe specific parts fitted. I can't remember exactly what parts were/weren't fitted. I think he said that the shocks, springs, torsion bars, wheels were all fitted, but the cage/strut brace wasn't. They came 'loose' with the car.

There was, in 1990, a batch of coupe's ordered in, that were on hand to replace any written off ones. However, we all know what 5 owners are like, and any smashed ones that could be bashed back into shape with a hammer, were :D

Because of that, only 5 out of that batch of 50 were sold. The other 45 were sold off as road cars.

28-06-2010, 19:22
going back about ten years or so my old man used to break renault 5's.
he had one that came in once one owner from new, phaze two, f reg, silver, cup car steel wheel's, strut brace with the coupe badge and coupe on the log book. it was sold original from radbourne racing (london dealership)
the car came on phaze two speedline wheels and the steel's were still brand new in the box's from the factory and the interior was different looks like a phaze one trim with red piping.

any one else seen a renault 5 like this?

I can make these if there is still interest?
Wont be any tooling cost, let alone £1500! (I do understand that was for die cast tho)
I can make them from cold cast aluminium or resin, either is not a problem.
I will however need an original to mould off, i have pm'd Sam fish to which i got no reply and im still waiting to here back from Jesus.
If people have a problem with me trying to make these i can just make them exclusivly for gen cup cars if needs be.

Below is an example of a rough cold cast aluminium test cast and a full production version made from resin.
