View Full Version : Starting a 5 project?
Opinions guys.
If you were to start a new 5 project. Would you go for a 5 GT Turbo thats in need of restoration including welding etc. Or would you buy a solid campus and start from there?

I'm sure you will be able to find a decent enough gt with work to tidy up which if your wanting as a project then it will come with mostly everything already
Pick up a 400-500 one of ebay and go from there

doing just that now..
i'd hold out for a solid gtt but a solid campus is just as good.. i hate rot:cry:
i picked up a j plate, went over Bods to look at some goodies he was selling and bought a gtt  whats worse was the bumpers, kit, lights etc all scattered about, but i could see it was solid so had to have it, even with its shocking paintwork.. :smokin:
bolted it all back together and got it mot'd, now just spending a few £ on others things and gonna sort out the engine etc and its off for a paint job:D
i could go spend the money on some of the tip top 5's that pop up in the classifieds but i like knowing my cars inside out.. i want to fit it myself so i know its been done badly and im not under the illusion that it might have been done right.. :scared:
i bought a rot box , and cut it all out and re welded parts in and new jacking points outt riggers sills , up to u pal :)
i paid cheap for the 5 gt turbo :)
you make it sound like there are no good solid cars about!,seek out a car that needs minimal welding/work or buy a reasonably rotten car an spend lots of time/money getting up to standard...costs can work out on par with purchasing a nice car in the first place.

i started with a rust bucket. it took awhile to sort but was well worth it in the end !:scratch::scratch::scratch:
tbh idealy you want a solid campus shell and a roted GTT so you know you will have all the bits you need.

if i was to do it properly i'd go for a campus, it's less work to strip it down as it has fewer parts and get the shell acid dipped or sand balasted, repair what needs repairing, drill holes and add rivets for the bodykit, get it repainted. while that was happening source the parts needed for the turbo conversion and get rear beam, subframe and running gear refurbed then fit it.
i'd then source a brand new wiring loom, the whole lot fit it up along with new brake servo, master cylinder, pipes, discs+pads, recon calipers and handbrake cables.
fit a rebuilt engine and gearbox, then lighting and glass, finished off with the interior of choice.
but it would cost and depends on how much work you want to do.
Thanks for your help guys.:agree:
I bought a rot box as you know kenny ken. now look at it... el mintafesto but the better shell the more you pay, the worse the shell the less you pay, but then more on metal work / body shop charges.
Campus... hassle, get a gt turbo and all bits are ready for you ;)

It is definitely worth getting a gt turbo over a campus, there are quite a few little differences that will cost you time to put right (not a lot of dosh though).
When doing a project think about how much time you realistically have, you can double the amount of time you recon you'll spend getting it right. I know i did, as you can see here: http://www.rtoc.org/boards/album.php?albumid=213
Also you wont have to declare the campus / gtt conversion for 'ringing' purposes.:agree:
Either way you will have to treat some areas, they are circa 20 yrs old now!!! I have never seen a 5 with 'zero corrosion' apart from after a rebuild. Good luck with the project though mate, save another one!:)
