View Full Version : Koni damper setting
I've bought myself a set of Koni yellows and was wondering what setting people put the rear dampers at and if the adjustment has a big influence on ride?
The adjustment on the front seems to make an obvious difference but the rears seem to be more subtle (when testing by hand, I haven't actually fitted them yet).
I drive the car mostly on the road and will keep the ride height standard (well a little lower at the front using the Koni supplied spring). I like the handling of the standard setup and the way it rides the bumps well, allows you to tailor your line mid corner and have fun on B-roads. I'm not so keen on the harder bouncy setup of most after market kits.
So I'm looking for peoples experience of Koni yellows setup for fast road driving.
Hi David,
From what I remember, there was only 3 settings on the rears anyway - Soft, medium & hard.
I always ran medium on the old Raider, as did T-cup, and I personally found that to be the best setting, road or track.
Setting the fronts correctly was more critical, more so from a track point of view.
Can I be nosey & ask where you bought those Koni's from? I'm after a full set for old whitey...

I'm also interested where have you bought them from. ;)
You're both going to hate me. Some guy on Ebay was closing a shop down and advertised them by part number only. I was the only bidder and got them for £100 brand new :ashamed:
I've been wanting them for ages but couldn't justify buying them due to how much I (don't) use the car. Cheapest I'd seen them elsewhere was £405 I think
Mart you're right, the rears only have a 3 settings. I'll put them on the middle setting and adjust the front to my preference when they're on the car. Cheers
Ebay aside, where's the cheapest place you've found that stocks them? Best price I could find, so far, is circa 4 & half.
Half the problem is actually finding somewhere that does stock them for the gtt!

Not sure if they actually stock them but this is about the cheapest I could find (scroll down):

Cheers :agree:
That's defo the cheapest I've seen yet, but still 4 one'ers... :(

is modified the new standard?
Mart, will you be using standard springs on the front or the ones that come with the kit?
I really don't want to lower the rear but I'm unsure how it'll be with a steeper rake angle than standard?
Also, has anyone played with the bump stops on the rear (Koni) dampers? They seem to be quite long in proportion to the amount of travel available. I guess it's so that the rate rises gently; last thing you want is a sharp rate increase on a mid corner bump!
is modified the new standard?
:D Only from a suspension point of view. The o.e shocks on whitey are pretty much goosed, and given it'll be a mission trying to find new shocks, and probably at a pretty penny too, I'll go with the second, well, equal best option - Koni.
David, I think the rear has been slightly lowered anyway, so I'll be going with the Koni springs up front. Should help balance things out.

Mart,
Larkspeed are pretty handy & often do discounts over the phone.. about 10%.. perhaps Dawn could try and get a club discount... ;)

When i got my konis last year nowhere had them in stock. I ended up ordering from demon tweeks, they had to order them in from koni & it took at least 2 month.
Might be worth trying to contact koni direct & cut out the middle man!

What is the part number of this Koni set?
I'd like to ask it here in Hungary how much would it costs here.
And the rears which come in this set are good for a 40mm lowering?
Because I have asked the Koni supplyer here and he told me that the yellow Koni for the back (26-1299) normal size 367mm full compressed 320mm. So for a 40mm lowering it can only move 10-15mm...

Even for me, that would be too cheeky to ask for! ;)
Funnily enough though, I was checking the companies that we're already affliated with (for discounts) that supply Koni gear, but alas it appears none of them do :crap:
I'll try Koni direct in the morning, unless Sam Fish comes up trumps before-hand...

Mart!
Rally design is offering this kit for 306+Vat
http://www.rallydesign.co.uk/product_info.php?cPath=&products_id=1246
Jimmy, that is top darts mate! Cheers :agree: That's another £100 saved for starters :)
I never even gave Rally Design a thought when trying to find Koni stockists :dearme: Even worse that I only used to live half hour up the road from them  :D

Not really 100 because it excludes Vat. It would be £352 if I'm right.
But you may also ask them for a club discount. :D
I'm also interested in this set.
Well ok, £100 ish on what I had found previously.
I'll give them a call tomorrow & ask for a club discount, or failing that, how much discount if 2 sets were to be purchased.
I'll post back on this thread with what they have to say.
Likewise, I'll also have a word with Koni direct.
Surely not another potential rtoc group buy...?! :D

It could be.
But there are some members who are rather buying on e-bay just because it was a 'little' cheaper there. :sad2::D:D
Waiting for your updates tomorrow. ;)
I need some Konis eventually (when I have enough cash). Cheers for the links.. :agree:

Mart hold back on Rally Design, i know a few guys who work there....
Let me get in touch with them in the next few days and see what i can do...
I can collect any part's aswell and save on the postage. ;)
Top banana, Chris :agree:
I'll leave RalDes to you then, cheers. I'll still give Koni UK a bell tomorrow though, just to see if I can cut a deal with them.
That price on Raldes only comes up when searching through Google, it isn't actually listed on their site. I know, I tried to make the order and they phoned me to say the price is now out of date and i shouldn't have been able to make the purchase.
I'm guessing there might be 5+ people wanting these at £350 so a group buy might be possible through one of these places (or Koni direct)?
Id be interested... but onliy if i could get them to sit as low as my car is now :)

Interesting. That's surely borderline false advertising then, and the fact they still haven't amended the price is a joke in itself. I'll see what Shopboy comes up with, then I might call them & ruffle some feathers :D ;)

Jimmy, the extended and compressed lengths you've been given are exactly right.
367mm extended
320mm when first contacting bump stop
Bump stop length 49mm
But remember the travel at the wheel obviously isn't directly proportional to the damper travel. Hopefully some can let us know what the ratio of damper travel:wheel travel is (approximately due to the change in ratio throughout travel)?

Here is how I've counted:
http://www.renaultclub.hu/Jimmy/shocks.jpg
In the 1st drawing I have measured the length of a std. shock when it is under a std. height GTT. The other 2 sides of the triangle is only estimated.
In the 2nd pic I have lowered the GTT by 4cm. Here what I have counted the length of the shock is about 32.9cm.
In the 3rd I have counted how much more the shock can be compressed to reach its full compressed state 320mm. It is about 2cm more. So I'm afraid it won't be enough. The shock will hit the bump stop.
I do not know how accurate is this counting, but I'm facing this problem.
Maybe my GTT is lowered a bit more than 40mm.
What if I simply cut 1cm of the bump stop? Than I can gain another 2cm in suspension.
Yeah, that's not a whole lot of travel is it! I think others have lowered the rear 30-40mm and still retained decent handling/composure though.
When I fit the dampers I'll give you some more detailed feedback regarding amount of travel.

Hi David, could you possibly upload a side on photo of your car when you've got the konis on as I'm after a new set of coil overs, I'm riding fairly low and would like to see how the car sits on this kit as it seems to come recommended

clio 16v shocks are good for lowered bak ends more than 50.... mines fine :) js want a decent front pair.. that i can lower it as much...

Interesting.
Because by the Koni catalogue the clio 16v rear shocks can only be compressed 5mm more. (315mm full compressed)

Will do Nick, but it'll just look like any other 5 with a 25ish mm drop at the front. The rear is obviously set by the torsion bar setting.

I would also be interested in a set of these if it does go down the group buy route. Good work guys! :agree:
Strike 1 - RalDes no longer supply Koni gear, or not for the gtt anyway. Fail.
Striiike 2 - DeenMotorsport have no stock either, and wasn't sure if they'd be getting them in again. In fact, the guy I spoke to didn't show much interest in anything Koni related. Fail.
Striiiiiiiiike 3 & out - Koni UK now run out of Performance Parts Direct based in Farnborough, and at the time of writing this I'm still awaiting a reply from them about a direct purchase/group buy scheme. Fail.
That leaves Larkspeed, who can still supply them (*), at a price of £452 all in, even with flexing the rtoc member shpiel, but it's a 7-10 day delay on getting them, and * he's not sure how many kits he can get hold of anyway. Potential Fail.

Mart, DCPerformance have said they'll do the kits at £399 if 10 people purchase.
Nice one for looking into it mate, but you've got more chance of getting a blow job off one of the Minogue sisters than getting 10 rtoc'ers coughing up 4 big ones.
