red - 12v (no problem)
black - chassis ground (no problem)

in the instructions it says the following 2 are optional, but what do they do?
white - analog output, connects to any auxiliary unit that accepts a 0-5 volt input
blue - serial output, connects to a RS-232 com port for hyper-terminal data logging (i take it i wont be needing this one)

Also can i leave this in place all the time without fear of the sensor failing on me like people have seen with the LC-1

I'm fairly sure the white analog wire would be used to connect to an aftermarket EFI system or ECU to allow it to read the output of the lambda sensor.

The blue is as you say just for wiring up to a serial cable so the data can be logged on a laptop.

With regards to leaving it in place all the time it should be fine. I've had my AEM uego on the car for a few years now with no problems. Just make sure it always has power when the engine is running and it will be fine. :agree:
