View Full Version : i think my turbo is on its way out

I dont use my 5 much nor has it had a good run out or even gone over 60mph in 2 years ,
But took it for a test drive today as ive replaced a brake line (:mad:).
when i got back i had a slight smoke coming out of my catch tank :scratch: i took the cap off nothing inside, bit of condesation thats it,
I put my hand over the cap to make a seal and loads of smoke comes out from the turbo (from the middle i think) and out the exhaust :eek: , should i just not do it or does it mean my turbo is fecked , i believe its a standard turbo.
oh and the wastgate flutter sounds funny somehow, like its gasping.

Ive seen on ebay some rebuild kits ,should i attemp it or get it done by a garage.

If you block the breather the engine chucks oil out of the exhaust, so dont block it.

Breather smoke could mean the rings are worn, if the catch tank isnt filling with oil i wouldnt worry too much.

right off subject but ive been having a look around at new turbos, but i wanted to know what type one i have allready is, ive looked at pics of new turbo`s on cgb`s web site , the rear looks / is different to anthing they have , any ideas , i have allways thought it was a standard t2

you cant really see the turb in that pic .
But the rear exhaust bit are they all the same on types of turbo`s ? does the one i have look like the standaed one

From your pics it looks pretty standard to me but what's stamped in the exhaust mating flange should be .35 for T2 rear exhaust housing.

Also what marking are on the outside of the compressor housing.

ill check what it says on it next time i get in the garage , cheers.

just the inside of the back looks different to anything cgb have

ive taken the turbo off today its got .48 written inside . and airsearch / garret on the outside ,, is the .48 standard then ?
there is little play in the shaft in all directions id say less that 2 mm .
