1.7 GTX :agree:
Some newer Renault 5's had them as an optional extra, so if you are very Lucky you could get all the parts from one of them.......trying to find one will be hard.:crap:
For more info ask Dave sbs as he fitted it to his gtt......the wimp that he is;)

The rack might be the same:) the pump might even be the same but what i should have said was, if he really wants power steering all the parts could be bought from reno:eek: so it all just bolts on with no fabrication required.
He could just buy the brackets/fittings from reno and use the rack/pump from a gtx if they are the same, Paul b might be able to answer that one:)

thought i could get an electric pump for a correct fitting rack
possibly, but for example, the vauxhall corsa, the pump has its own ECU to run it
thin i could prob get one off a punto or something like that
just need to find a rack that will fit and suitable for an electric pump seems i may be oin for a hard task!¬

How is it a hard task if reno made a c1j 5 with already fitted......the hard part of it would be getting the parts:coffee:
cij 5 parts still available from renault?
you will be very suprised what you can still get from renault one of the only car manufactures you can still get bits from for a 20 year old car.
some stuff you can not but its pricey i am in there every week buying stuff:)
as rare as the heated raider seats that were available....
..or were they electric..?

Why not get one of the clio electric power steering pumps, and then a 5 power steerinf rack, you can prob get a clio pump off ebay,
good luck
let us know how ya get on
Only ever seen one and it was on a 1.4 tx if that's any help
thanks for all the help i will see what i can do
Be a man & keep the normal steering ;)
I toyed with the idea of this, I even saw an N/A 1.4 R5 in france that my brothers wifes brother had actually done, I had a drive in it but it was awfull, no feel at all, stick with a normal rack and get ya arse down the gym

I remember a club member years and years ago who had a white gtt with 'I've got no' power steering. I can't remember his name though.
There was an n/a 5 up for sale down Col's road a few years ago with power steering and air-con. I toyed with the idea of buying it for the air-con, but didn't bother :(
Use the clio williams rack for 2.75turns lock to lock, or the Clio 16v rack for 3.2turns lock to lock.
I think the rear gearbox mount may need to be changed/modified to create some extra space.
As for a leccy pump, I'm sure you can use one of a mk1 clio 1.9 diesel...
I'm considering it, I'm adding a 172 engine up front and a making a few changes that will make end up making the steering heavier. With a C1J up front I wouldnt bother though, the steering is at its most heaviest at slow speeds say when parking, as soon as your moving its plenty light.
what age clio 16v rack fits seems these are cheaper and more available than a williams rack?
am i right in the thinking the pump will pretty much just need power no seperate control unit is required?
I've not seen a pump in the flesh but yes, all it needs is power
Keep an eye out on ebay for both items, I'd go for the williams rack but they are harder to get hold off.
The clio 16v rack from any "valver" should fit, however you will need the brackets that it mounts onto the subframe with.
Also you may need to look at the connection from your steering column to the rack
