Never thought my car would get you that excited:D
oh man yo just dont know! thing is ive wanted a b18ft powered 5 for ages but never had the time to do one, so you can understand why i get a boner when i see yours:D
the only other one i get to see personally is the rear engined one which has been off the road ever since notnormal sold it, its been rebuilt now but unsure how far its actually got.

im assuming youve got a that wild cam fitted? did you have the exhaust manifold fabricated or did you buy it from prima?

Markey Mark (BD)
28-09-2008, 22:12
Yeah the wild cam is i the head now and is all torqued down now to the block. At the moment its a prima exhaust ma nifold but its getting taking off and a new one fitted, i've got a few probs with it so need to fabricate a new one. Plus i don't like the Prima one anyway:)

raj
28-09-2008, 22:14
what issues are you having with the prima one? clearance or something else? i thought with being similar to the gtt one it would be ok! it looks ok from the pics.

The quality and the fit isn't brilliant, its been extended already to move the turbo out abit more but i need it out further as the compressor housing is about 1" from the thermostat housing so can't fit a hose on. Also i got to fit the external wastegate in there too:D

Its going to be easier to fabricate a new one rather then mod this one plus i can position the turbo where i want.

so will you be going for a shorter manifold to turbo run.? hang on..isnt the OE manifold short.? suppose the problem with the turbo being down the back of the engine would be clearance? and more faffin around?

Yeah with the turbo i'm using the space down the back is limited so positioning it above the gearbox works better for me, obviously the run will be longer than standard.

Just to compare Haz said he didn't feel any difference between the standard manifold and the Prima one, just made getting to the turbo easier, with the new manofold i'll se if i can squeeze abit more out of it by changing the design abit.

Yeah the cooler is abit big isn't it:D I'm thinking of that manifold mate just working out where the best place for the turbo is first before i build or mod one.

On;y reason battery is in that place is because header tank other parts will be living on the other side so hopefully the weight will be even, if not it'll go just behind the passenger seat.

Really depends on turbo, air flow and pipe run.

I've used this intercooler with a C1J in situ with a VNT and between this intercooler and the old intercooler i had (forge front mount) i had no decrease in boost pressure across the set up.

Been a while since i added to my thread so i thought i'd write an up date.

Since last time half the boost hose's have been fitted, alternator is finally on with the new bracket, sourced a coil pack to convert it from the originl dizzy (just got to mount it), fitted the Willies wheels, new suspension all round and i've finally desided on the turbo position in the engine bay. Once its mounted i can finish off the other side of the boost pipes.

Over christmas the plan is to get the exhaust manifold built so i can mount the turbo and start the exhaust, mount the oil cooler and run the pipes, mount coil pack and modify various other brackets to allow me to fit various bits. Might do abit of wiring too while i've got it out the garage.

I'll stick some progress pics up soon, its taking a while to do but it'll be worth it when its finished

raj

so where have you decided to mount the turbo unit mark.?

Its abit hard to describe but it'll be 90deg the other way to where its sitting now, also got a new turbo for it the old T34 has been sold

Markey Mark (BD)
15-02-2009, 15:25
Got a few pic's of the slow progress on the 5.

Got the exhaust all mounted now, its Haz's old 3" system which i've modded abit to fit it to the car. I've welded a new 45deg end on the tailpipe and slash cut it, welded new mounts on and made a little mount on the back engine mount so the downpipe will have abit more support. The system has a flexible jiont in the so the movement from the engine won't crack the exhaust.
On thing i might have to change is removing the scilencer, its quite big and sits very close to all the fuel lines so might remove it and just run a straight through pipe.:D

Got the Willy wheels fitted too finally, just need abit of a clean

Hope to get some more done soon.

That is insane mate, I'm putting a volvo lump in my clio but nothing like as mad as what your are doing...

What have you changed engine wise then, better pistons ? just looking at the size of that turbo it's gonna be running some serious hp and was curious to what you have changed internally...

Also what did you paint the engine with ?

:DYeah it is going to be abit insane mate, i've done a far bit to the engine and plan to see how much power you can push out of one.

Bottom end wise its fairly standard apart from a balanced crank and a very light flywheel, top end the head has recieved a far bit of porting, bigger valves, stronger valve springs, custom spec cam which Scoff kindly come up and just a few other little bits.

I painted the engine block in Hammerite, need a few other bits doing soon but not sure to paint or ploish yet

Very very clever stuff mate, i was thinking of going down that route with mine but then thought other wise, my pocket wont go that deep lol..
So will the turbo not fit under the inlet where it goes as standard like on mine, looks good out the side just thought maybe the turbo may not clear the bulk head..

My engine is comming out now, i have a new fly wheel and clutch comming next week, going to paint the engine and do head gasket and sump gasket all at the same time.. I was just going for a cheap sleeper as the clio is only a bulk standard 5 door, but people wont expect a volvo lump under the hood..

So you run standard pistons then ?.. I didn't realise you could do so much to them with out changing the pistons and rod's etc... Also when ever i look on the net for performance parts i can't find any thing for the 480 t lump..

Any idea's ?

Markey Mark (BD)
07-05-2009, 19:52
No the turbo is too big to go in the standard position, wouldn't cear the bulkhead at all.

To be honest 99% of the bits on my engine are custom made, there's not much off the shelf performance parts out there at all.

As for the piston's and rod's, time will tell:D

Thought so, that turbo is huge and the intercooler  HUGE lol.. I remember a mate of mine called duncan buit a stupid fast fiat uno turbo with a huge tubo and intercooler, it lagged a bit but that made it fun cus when the lag clears woooosh.... Hold on to your seat... lol

Good work mate, keep us up dated on that engine, i'm very interseted to see progress..

I just noticed the date of when i updated this thread, has it been that long!

Well for a late update

I had got alittle lazy with the project in the late part of this year, what with saving for my holiday i had in Austarlia and work i didn't have much time to spend on it. Well its time to drag the old girl out now and fit the mounting of bits i got it sitting in the garage.

Last weekend i did alittle, finished modifing most of the engine brackets, started templating the coil-pack bracket and finished the boost pipe from the turbo (now all pipes done).

In the car ready to go on is:
- New roll cage (weld in)
-Gauges
-Exhaust silencer
-Screamer pipe
-Brakes
-Nitrous
-Master cylinder
-Fuel lines

Over christmas the priority is to get these parts in and fitted, have all the custom brackets welded up and test fitted to the engine before powder coating and generally get the thing finished!

Will have some update pic's soon of it looking more complete then before ;)

Think for me this year will be finishing it and testing it to see how it performs, then maybe the following year if it performs well see about entering the car.

Made some more progress with the 5 yesterday at last.

Got the new cage half mounted in, during the week new plates are going to be cut to make the box's for the floor that the cage will be mounted to. Once in it'll be sandblasted and painted.
All the old sound deadening come out, as i'm not have a dash all of it is now in the bin! :D

A new control/gauge panel has been drawn up redy to be cut out and all the new gauges and switchs mounted. Only bits that i need for the runing of the car are going to be there, all the electrical extra's have been romoved from the car aswell as the wiring from the dash loom (electric window's, stereo, front fog switch, rear wiper/washer switch etc)

New disc's got fitted, just got to celan up the calipers and paint them front and back then thats the brake system done.
While the wheels were off i tried the new slicks on, needed to trim little bit of the inside lip of the arch trims. Now can get full lock with the 22-9x13 tyres without them catching. :)

Got some new lights from Mike (phase 1 16v turbo) recently, they got fitted, juts need to modify the paneling behind the passenger head light abit so i can run the boost pipe under the light as its catching it quite abit. Another welding job for me!

Engine side the dizzy has found its new position now, will be making the mounting bracket for that too, also new timing sensor will be having its bracket made too at thre same time. Downpipe has been measured up and set to be finished too, also got the remove the original silencer that Haz fitted to the 3" exhaust and fit the 3" cheey bomb in its place.

Over next few weekends all the welding/bracket making will be completed so pretty much all the stuff can finally be fitted in place.
Made some good progress again thankfully, with the better weather now i should be on target to get it all finshed soon. Been long time coming now.

Will get some new pic's up over next few weeks once these parts have been completed.

Well its been almost ayear since i have been able to work on this project what with work and issues with using equipment round my garages.

The car started to look alittle rejected and i wasn't happy with few things i done before so before the engine went back in for good i decided to sort shell out one last time, but due to not being aloud to weld round my house anymore i have had to wait 3 months to be able to go somewhere to do it

Today i moved the car to Bigbadboytanks parents double garage so i could do alot of welding work on the shell and make alot of brackets and fit a fair few bits to the shell too.

Its there for 2 weekends and in that time all welding work will be done ready for little lick of paint (again) and the engine to be dropped in for last time.
I'll be sticking progress pics up each day so those who are interested can see the progress and to prove i have actually done something to it! :D

Heres pic of car at its new home for 2 weeks, will stick more up tomorrow of the progress

Done downpipe today which now finishes the exhaust system off totally, i will be moving on to the screamer pipe next but need to get length of pipe first.

I'll be doing the filler work on the bodywork during week ready for its fresh lick of paint again, next weekend will be cage plates and any left over bits that i find before it goes for paint again.

Another weekend of progress on the car.

Got the passenger side front panel modified to accept the new boost pipe run, tweeked exhaust system again as was sitting alittle too low and also mounted the fuel swirl pot in the back of the car.
I managed to put a layer of filler on the engine bay before i finished tonight so tomorrow it should be dry ready for me to sand it down.
Started routing the screamer pipe today, need extra length of pipe to route it way i want so hoping i can get it tomorrow and finish it off.

Not got any pics today but will get some more up tomorrow once i done a few more jobs to it.

Cheers for advise mate, the high build primer was out of a rattle can but not the normal brand so hopefully won't have too much of a problem. Most of it will be rubbed off as its only there for guide coat so i know where it needs work.
Hopefully its off to painters soon so will let him knwo whats gone on there.

Right bit more today, the welding on the shell is done now! :)

This afternoon after work i made the screamer pipe, modified the new wing to accept the pipe and then welded the pates to the floor for the rest of the cage.
Done little more filler work on the engine bay to finally smooth the last little bits out.

Its off to painters on thursday evening so i'll be takling all the parts off the car again, i'll get some pics of the new additions before i break it down.

Its getting there, getting excited now! :D

Right i cracked on with the car today, was lovely weather so made most of it.

I rolled it out the garage today and decided to attack the interior and paint the subframe and start fitting the parts to the car.

Due to the rules of the 'Outlaw Shootout' i have to have carpet so decided to fit underlay and a black raider carpet to the car, the freshely painted rollcage went in too and the fitted the seat and dash back in. Just got to fit the wiring loom to the dash now and then i shoud be ready to see if it all works in there.

Engine bay was treated to a clean and some black paint to the subframe to freshen it up abit, fitted new master cylinder and fluid resoviour and started to run the speedo cable and fit the header tank in.

I'll be finishing the interior off first then i'll be fitting the freshened up engine, once i get round to doing that.
Here's some pics for everyone to have look ;)

Before anyone ask's, the car is not ornage, its just the light was so bright today and for some reason the car does shimmer orange abit but it is red!

Well was nice weekend again just gone so the car rolled out the garage again for more work, i only did a sunday on it as i was working on my F7P powered 5 on sat (may do build up thread on that soon)

Not many pics taken unfortunately but have now managed to fit the new Clio 16v hubs with new bearings, spare clean front calipers with new pads, new steering rack gaitor and then sprayed the inner archs with underseal again just to keep the rot at bay

At the back i fitted the refurbished calipers i bought off here while ago with new pads and then undersealed under there too. I had to cut the handbrake cables off as they had siezed solid in the old calipers so looks like another part for the shopping list

The engine was treated to a clean up and lick of paint again and started to build it up slowly. Didn't manage to fit the new painted sump before pic was taken so engine still sits on oversprayed sump
Will be ordering new clutch this week, once thats here the engine can be matted to the freshly painted and rebuilt box and then dropped in the car.

Markey Mark (BD)
06-06-2011, 21:24
Right its been little while since updated this, main reason for this is i've hit a major problem with the clutch which has stopped me fitting the engine bay up.

After a cock up with having the wrong flywheel machined to accpet the new clutch (:sad2:), once i got the right one machined and clutch fitted it seems the fingers on the cover plate are compressed in so much once the release bearing touchs the fingers it sits about 1mm away from the friction plate :crap:
Once i fitted it to car and clutch cable fitted the fork arm sits so far back it almost touchs gearbox and cable has so much slack pedal doesn;t even work. All i can describe it as it looks like clutch is always depressed the arm sits so far back.

Turbo Ted has same clutch, after checking out pics of his all looks the same but am going to see his one close up as his cover plate fingers sit further away from friction plate more than mine.

So looks like Pod Day is out now as don't think i'm going to have enough time to sort this out and then fit it all back up and map it.

For everyone to see here's pic of the clutch on the engine.

Not sure I know what you mean Mark. You saying the fingers are already 1mm away from plate before there's any release pressure on it ? That would suggest plates are too thick or something ? Or is it just the angle of the release fork thats screwed it up ?

Markey Mark (BD)
06-06-2011, 21:46

It is hard one to explain mate

Bit of both mate, with clutch bolted to engine as it should be if i hold release bearing up against the fingers the bearing is about 1mm away from friction plate.
Yes the release fork sits too far back but i think this is down to the fingers being compressed soo much.

I think your right mate but i can't see what bit wrong, i'm going to Robs (Turbo Teds) wenesday to check his clutch as he's got same one but his works fine.

Tony Walker
06-06-2011, 22:25
Maybe your clutch is meant for a flywheel with a slight recess where the friction plate sits? could you make some sort of spacer for the cover?

Scoff
06-06-2011, 23:54
Yeah, as tony says or your plates are too thick for the cover ?

Hopefully if robbies is in bits (I heard he broke his gearbox "running in" !) then you'll be able to measure stuff up ok.

Mark alot of these clutch's require a 'step' machining in the flywheel.. This would need to be done around the outside (where the cover plates bolt up) I know I had to do this on my Tilton setup..

Hope this helps buddy.

Markey Mark (BD)
07-06-2011, 17:01
Dave - Yeah i've had the step machined into the flywheel as per the diagram i was supplied with the clutch ;)

Scoff - I actually double checked that and theres no physical way to put it in wrong way but was worth check ;)
Yes Robs car is in bits mate, output bearing colapsed in the box so he had issue with few gears at last surrey meet, box is all rebuilt now.

Steve - Cheers mate, i may be doing a call on some fellopw members soon as i do have a hell of alot on to get ready for pod day.

I have had a chat with Anthony at Techcraft, he seems to think Helix may have fitted slightly too thick Ceramic pads to the friction plate, i will be pulling my clutch off and measuring it all up to double check and comparing it to Robbies clutch too.

Well had another package turn up this week which was kind of shock, i got my head back thankfully after lending it out nearly year ago!

As i'm waiting for the new release bearing to turn up i thought i'd give the head a refresh and then bolt most of the newly podercoated bits and the new Siemens injectors to the head.

I'll be bolting the head to the engine once bottom end comes out again to do release bearing, once all back in car then i can bolt up all the turbo and exhaust then start making all the hoses fit.

Well had bit more development on the 5 recently.

Few weeks back i bought a fair few spares off Dave R5, included in the spares was a set of Forged pistons and bored block! :D So last week once got bit of spare time guess what happened to my engine, yes bottom end come apart and crank, bearings and oil pump got transfered to the new block (freshly painted red) and then the forge pistons were fitted in. Head was fitteda dnfinally the engine was completely assembled for last time.

Over the weekend the weathers been basically crap here but thankfully sat afternoon had few hours of dry weather so me and my brother manahed to fit the engine into the car and get the turbo, exhaust, screamer pipe and exhaust fitted on. To say i'm happy and making progress is understandment! :)

The right clutch bearing turned up few weeks ago too, thats all fitted in too. Pedal feels different to normal clutch, it may just be me but as my brother says only want to tell if its right is drive it so it was decided finish car and see if it works.

I've just ordered all the elbows and straight lengths of silicone hose i need to do the water pipes so hopefully by next weekend they will be here so that canbe done.

Sorry not got any pics as its so crap here the pics come out really dark, if weather clears up this week will drag car out and take few pics

I also decided to cut a grill about to fill in the gaps around the headlights and intercooler, actually worked out ok just need to hav it painted red then i'll secure it to the car

Also i decided to make something to cover up the end of the camshaft since i wasn't using a dizzy cap, spent an hour on weekend modifying an original dizzy cap. Didn't turn out too bad i think.

Will be continuing on weekend with car, more progress pics to follow

Well thought be time for another update, done few more little jobs on it again fitted the adjustable fpr and lines (need securing in), managed to get new air filter too and also i fitted the gauges i've had for about 3yrs now! :D

Only pain now is i got to take all the boost and water hard pipes off again to get them all powder coated, look abit better then the copper and dull alloy look!

Its coming together slowly, next on the list is fuel system in the back once the Bosch 044 turns up and then its on to wirirng the ecu. Yes i'm doing it myself even though i was abit reluctant to do it!

Yeah they are mate, made sure went for decent hose rather then the cheap stuff when i ordered it from my local supplier.

I think i went with swirl pot for piece of mind mate, always good to know it deffinately has a constant supply sat there even under hard acceleration.

Well its been little while since updated this thread so thought let you all know how it coming along

Since last update i've been buying alot more of the stupid little bits i needed to get, connectors, relays, wiring, fuel lines, etc.

I've managed to modify the downpipe again, i wasn't happy with the angle it sat at under the car and it also hung too low so i bought a new 90deg 3" pipe and 2 flanges and modified it. Its now completed on car and sits alot higher up and angle of downpipe is much better too, also having the 3" flanges means the exhaust is easily unbolted now rather then trying to force it out the slip joint

Engine wise i've got the AEM boost controler fitted, turbo re-fitted with new oil feed, oil pressure sender unit mounted and a few other little jobs. Tomorrow i plan to spend another day on it so will see what else i can get finished off, hopefully i can do all the wiring for the fuel system in the back

Unfortunately the sites not letting me upload pics so i can post any, no idea why it won't let me but i've given up trying now as everything i do it still won't let me :(

Bit more progress this weekend, i've been busy changing various vacumn pipe fittings on the inlet manifold and one way valve so they look and also seal better.

Also been busy making and fitting the mounting plate for the coil packed, only place i really had left was above the alternator so made a plate which mounted on the original alternator bracket. Seems nice and sturdy but not entirly happy with the HT leads so will prob have some new ones made up soon.

While was working down there got the new engine mounts fitted from Logg, nice fit i got to say.

Managed to paint few water pipes, secure the new fuel lines up, make up the new timing sensor bracket for the gearbox and few odd jobs too while had few bis off.
I've ordered new oil catch tank, filters and pipe for water temp sensor, once there in i'll be fitting them up and then once the exhaust downpipe is on i'm pretty much done ready for wiring

Bit of an update today, Dave Reed popped over today and helped me with wiring the car up. Yep thats right the car is 75% wired up now!

We couldn't finish it all today as i ran out of wire covering and need 2 more plugs but most of it is done and routed so won't take much to finish it off.
A big thanks has to be given to Dave for taking time out to help me, one big step closer to completion now

Also while i had the bonnet off i completed to last few alterations to the water system (new routing of pipework) and fitted the vernier pulley on, after we finish a few jobs tomorrow we'll be carrying on with the work on the car so maybe in 2 weekends time i might be able to download a base map and finally get the car started for first time in 5yrs!
