im having a few problems trying to get my car to settle on idle. the timing seems to be all over the place as no matter what i do the revs will raise and lower betwwen 1600 and 1100. sure i will be able to lower this once it settles.
to help the problem is it possible to grind the locating lug off the side of the distributer so i can twist it round to help with the timing?
the car has a 285 cam in it, carb is standard.
can you suggest anything, cheers.

What are you taking your rpm data from? your digi dials or inductive clamp?
you can remove the bolt and twist the whole dizi drive unit round 180deg (dont forget to swap your leads back tho to correct stock postion) then just clamp it from the other side.. like this your able to find your pick up of ign ok by dailing it in, normaly tell by the sound...
But normaly you shouldnt need to do this unless you have a bad cam grinde or timing..
Also if it is out your strobe will show this with an irregular flash as will afrs be way out etc..

rpm data is coming from the dials.
when the cam was put in aparently it wasnt dialled in with the old dial gauge etc, im hoping this aint the problem as more time etc.
i havent been using a strobe light but rather a good mechanic.

Sounds like ya cam ain't been dialed in properly then, whip the timing cover off and take a look

Nah, just drain the coolant and oil, remove the fan belt, degassing tank and move the oil catch pot back out the way, you should have enough room to get to the timing cover, next you need to lock the engine, a coilover spanner takfully placed in the clutch inspection hole will do the job and get ya 19mm spanner on the pully bolt, once thats out the way the pully should come off and then you need to undo the 12 (I think its 12) 10mm bolts that hold the cover on and hey presto with abit of screwdriver based leverage the cover should come off, you will have less skin and blood afterwards though
i would put a strobe on as well just to see , for a piece of mind also :)

cheers for the help folks, found that the dizzy gear was out by 1 tooth. when at tdc the dizzy arm was between leads 1 and 2.
sorted it out and started it and its as sweet as a nut.
