Good. They are actually cost effective in the long run if you dismantle your engine a lot because you don't need to replace them during re-assembly as with stretch bolts. Also makes it a lot easier to locate the head gasket/head onto the block correctly.

I use ARP head bolts on my Cosworths (YB), they only recommend re using them 3 times.

Yeah as I am sure he is using all the original internals just with uprated bolts:laugh:

Not seen it in a little while but I liked the way he kept it all standard and now its gone track slack stripped which I am not to sure about. I know hes done his turbo in, I am trying to get the 5 down to his one day on the rollers to see what its pushing

put studs on a c1j and watch it lift up the liners when you take the head off... bad times!

I didnt think there was anything wrong with just using the traditional 12.9s, alot cheaper and no issues.. Nothing wrong with ARPs but i just couldnt fork out the cost knowing that the uprated 12.9s cost fook all and work well on these motors... i considered ARPs on the d motor last winter but same again thought sod it, ill re use the 16 year old (prob stretched) head bolts and it never gave me issues... But hay thats why we called Backyard racing, we dont spend money for the fun of it, we like to do things on the cheap :p

The most you can torque the 12.9's to is maybe 70ft lbs before some of them snap.

The studs, if they're like the ones used on Cossies, can take more. Maybe 100ft lbs. That might be useful if you're making 550bhp from your 2 litre. Or 360bhp from your 1.4 litre.

I agree with what your saying ian but has anyone lifted a head on a GT yet etc  i cant comment on a cossi, but i can say ive fitted them to my 3L 944 turbo project ive done which is still sat under a sheet :ashamed:..

I just didnt feel a GT turbo would need them as much? I mean my 1.6 civic making a bull**** figure of 399Wheel bhp but has run 132mph traps hasnt had any probs with head bolt issues... ok if i had the cash id buy everything a could wouldnt we all...

I just havnt seen evidence yet that a c1j needs ARP conversion...:coffee:

I use the 12.9's torqued to 100lb ft but i find that the socket moves in the head before the actual bolt distorts

you need to be making an awfull lot of power before you need to worry about head bolts. If stuart can run 12.9's with no problem, as well as the rest of us then there is the answer.

thanks for the disscusion boys,
i will agree with everything uve all said

lol @ rob i too mate like to do thing cheap. have used a head gasket twice on 1.5 bar with secondhand bolts and it worked great.

i am considering arps on my volvo engine, just for the fact that it will be coming apart a lot.

i will check out that website ian :agree:

They must be a better quality bolt?

i will check out that website

I've not looked at that website, I just phoned them. I bought sixty 12.9's from them by mail order a few years ago. I phoned them last week to ask about the price of some more for the RTOC shop. Seemed like a good price for bolts to some kind of British Standard. But so were the last ones I bought from them and some of those snapped.

I asked them to supply Unbrako but they don't stock that make. To get them in for me was very much more expensive, partly due to the £12 carriage to them and then another £12 carriage to me.

For the cheap bolts, if I bought 200, it worked out to be £2.78 for 10. For 200 Unbrako it worked out to be £6.10 for 10.
