What is the science behind a side exit exhaust?

Also, Enlarged downpipe.

why do the increase BHP?

Depends where your engine lives ..personally I don't see the point :p
It's to bypass the rear silencer on 'normal' cars .It is a restriction and usually the quicker you can get the exhaust gases out the better .
But mostly they are installed for the reason Raj quotes

I can only asume its the due to the large diameter and slightly shorter pipe run helping to reduce back pressure from the turbo. I would think that having only one 90 deg kink in the pipe run would help too.

Is it only me that doesnt like side exits.? :disagree:

Ive never ran a car with a sidey. There must be a reason they are often fitted.:coffee:

lighter than having a big back box and shorter

shorter route for exhaust gas, when i had my sidey with no silencer at all, eg just an L shaped pipe my turbo came in 500rpm sooner to full boost

we made on on my mates clio 16v and it actually made it slower though, the 1.8 16v must rely on back pressure

With the 16v engine aswell I de-cated my old engine before taking it out my clio for the turbo conversion and just with the de-cat pipe in it seemed to make it more slugish

New poster! (less than 10 posts)

My mate wanted a side exhaust fitted to his megsport, but he couldnt find anyone to fit it as he kept being told it would fail any M.O.T. & it is illegal to fit it with fumes exiting to the left as that is pavment side......

If you wana know anything more ask ADS225 (".)

true, i only wanted to save weight and save weight in the right places ie move as much up front as poss.
I got told to back off out of one of the corners at bruntingthorpe because of the noise but its only noisy when the poppet valve is open which only happens when i run an actuator.
Pass's mot fine though, no probs and on tick over its quiet:)

Am I not right in thinking you don't get back pressure from turbo cars?

No dude you do get back pressure on turbo cars, hence the use of larger downpipes and more free flowing exhausts. But by reducing the exhaust back pressure with a free flowing exhaust system you can cause oil leakage from the turbo oil seals, leading to blue exhaust oil smoke.:agree:
