View Full Version : The new ph2 Gtt
Just bought a new gtt off ollyhock, came up at the right price so is replacing my old ph2.
The low down
68k miles with part service history, Drives like a new un..
O.e spec apart from mongoose exhaust, turbines & 14lb boost.
No rust anywhere, never had panels replaced/welding & dent free.
Its got some nice original touches to it, Original dealer stickers in rear window & tax disc holder. Original rcl plip that works, Gen renault mats, Non leaking sunroof (probably cursed that), original stereo etc. The interior is mint, even the carpet doesnt have the usual hole in it.
The plans are to generally clean it up under the bonnet, refit the drivers side door graphic & get the small dent sorted on the bonnet. Might refit the std wheels for the o.e look. Also need to get my towing eye cover painted & possibly the front bumper blown over to make it mint.
Give it a good clean up today following a machine polish by Mr 5 lastnight to remove some polish swirls so took some pics.

Looks very well mate. Nice :)
Me old gtt is going to renault heaven mate, needs far too much work to sort it really, it always looked better on top than underneath:( its fully stripped though so the parts will keep both the van & this going.
The mats have part numbers on ill have a look tomorrow, think there unavailable though? Stereo is pioneer 2090 with low quality output/speakers:laugh:

Very nice mate, very nice! :agree::smokin:

Actually still looks really sleek siting at that height! Been thinking about raising mine to get a better ride quality and seeing your pics i reakon i'm gonna have too:agree:

Very nice Brigsy, very nice indeed.......definatly get the old speedlines on there IMO :agree:
Cheers for the replys all :)
Im going to pop the speedlines on, would be rude not to.
The rideheight is std wallace, its still got the std decarbon dampers. To be fair the ride is good but a bit crash bang compared to a modern car! Corners good on o.e setup though.
CGB is selling a pair of the Renault front mats on ebay, slightly worn and dirty but would clean up well, no rears though.

What panels do you need penfold?
Will be bringing it to the rr day Ashy :agree:
Popped the speedlines on the other night just to see what it looked like. They all need new tyres as one is a totally cracked mxv & the rest are cracked pirelli's so only a trial run.

Might aswell get them refurbished before using them too so they are mint. Are any decent tyres available in the correct profile these days?
Still need to get the door graphic fitted. Have cleaned up the engine bay & is totally back to o.e apart from strapped intercooler & kevlar heatshield, pics to follow. Everything works 100% now, oil pressure gauge & even anti-perc.

am sure you can get a good size 888 for the 13" speedline  i found some and sure! am wanting and shot when my current uniroyles go baldey.

Oh my god< what a horrible bag of ****e bollox. That is really ugly. What are you doing??? Ermmm,,,, No,,, doesn"t matter how hard I try, I JUST ABSOLUTELY LOVE THESE CARS> Why have I just sold my pride and joy?
I prefer the anthracite turbines Jon :) And down 25mm. Perfick. :agree:
Have considere the subtle drop Trev, may do in the future. Corners really well at std rideheight & the ride is real good though, i enjoy not having to worry about what route i need to take to avoid speedbumps at the moment:D
One of the foglights needed a bulb so have fixed it. Engine bay is minty now, uncut std boost hose, new boughicords & various bits fitted, pics to follow.
Next mission is to paint my towing eye cover.

That's a fantastic car Mr Briggs! :niceone:
Good find!!
That picture of your dash has scuppered my thoughts that all phase 2's came with the graduated 1/4 1/2 3/4 fuel gauge?? I see yours has the simpler version?
Mine had the shaded fuel gauge to begin with Steve, the oil pressure gauge was broken & the gauges were badly faded so i changed to a mint orange set i had in stock, adjusted the mileage to match the original set.
My old white ph2 had the fuel gauge with no shading though, think there a bit mix & match these cars, like the different original stereos etc?
Engine bay pics after cleanup, its getting there now. Just need a new o.e turbo heatshield & new hot air pipe to airbox. The hot air pipe is on order, is the heatshield still available??
Also carb top has its fair share of marks, the original had been cut down so had to fish one out of the spares. If not too expensive i may renew if still available.
Some of the brackets have a bit of surface rust on, ill see to them over winter when i get bored.

You can still get new under bonnet heat mats for about £40 I think??
Whats the part number for the mat? ill be having one of them:D
Bought a new o.e starter/turbo heatshield as i had a bit of spare cash.
Heatshield looks like it will be fun to fit, also needs anti perc fan sensor hole drilling.

Turbo heatshield (6001009529) was £43.75 & starter heatshield (6001009580) was £29.83. I think they were with my mates staff discount though?

Small update time. Got talking to a mate & they do powdercoating where he works, so got some engine bay parts powdercoated for gratis.
Had to clean up the bits myself with a flapper wheel but they turned out really well, prior to coating all parts were tatty/rusty. The finish is pretty near o.e so should look good when fitted:)
Airbox, old vs new. Fitted my new sticker from the set off Sam Fish. All the screws are currently soaking in vinegar to remove rust, seems to be working really well!

Looking damn fine brigsy top work, I wish my raider was as up together as that under the bonnet.:agree:
Update time!
When i bought the car the drivers side door graphic was missing. I assumed the graphics were o.e so bought a full set, trade for £148:eek:
Mr 5 fitted the new graphic when he machine polished the car, the new graphic was no where near a similar match, totally different shades! The car has also had both sides painted to a high standard at some point, but they have laquered over the graphics:sad2:
With the o.e graphics clear, there was no way i could fit the new ones over the top. Only options were repaint the door/qtr & more graphics, or try & get the vinyl matched.
I called round a fair few places locally, most were unhelpful or insisted they couldnt match it/not interested in a small job.
I went to signs express & the lad in my local branch said he would need to do a full side as couldnt match the current vinyl fitted. He scanned my new o.e graphic for the 'gt turbo' lettering, took a couple of months to sort it but its done now.
Got both sides done & fitted for £70, laminated vinyl fitted over the top so should last. Im happy with how it looks, not 100% o.e but ill be grudged spending a lot of money to make it 'right' :)
Also the new vinyl covered a worn patch on the passenger side graphic that had been laquered over:sad2:

Its generally still running great aswell, touch wood it has never missed a beat. Have replaced a few little bits like new numberplate lights/gearknob for a mint condition one.
The tape deck did pack up on the o.e pioneer stereo, driving down the road & my hardcore heaven tape stopped:laugh: on inspection the drive belt had snapped, after a little bit of research maplins still sell them, £3 gave it a new lease of life i love old technology.:D

made and fitted for £70, thats a fecking nice bloke, people round here would want £30 or so just to stick them on the car..
im putting the money aside for a respray and want stickers back on, but would change the colouring slightly, perhaps the gt turbo bit in a lighter grey, i've seen a few tungys with them.. :smokin:
i think your sticker guy could sell a few sets on here if he showed his face, might be worth asking him to join and offer his services.. :)
Nice weather today so give it a good valet/polish:)
Got a rare pic of the gtt/van together aswell. If i ever needed to sell one of them i couldnt decide which one would go?
The gtt is probably the best car ive owned condition wise & looks/drives mint but the van is a lot faster.. Ill have to keep both!
Also turned up the boost on Benj's tungy, should have got a pic of the two together but forgot.

It does corner miles better on the turbines aswell :agree:

yeah if he can do me them for my white 5, that would be great :)

No probs mate:)
Had a couple of probs with the gtt this week! Front brakes have been binding on, i thought it was from lack of use. Freed off calipers (they werent bad at all) then went to bleed the brakes & the master cylinder packed in, pedal is flat to the floor!
The brakes have always been a bit gash, long pedal travel & seemed to be progressively getting worse lately, good job it happened outside the house i suppose or could have been messy:eek:
LeMans 24hr & back done without missing a beat:D 1328 miles on 4 full tanks, done some badass speeds on the french highways too! Temps of up to 28 deg & coolant never went above half way whilst driving, o.e for the win..
Fitted the williams alloys for the trip as the tyres are low on the turbines. Got a few good pics in france will upload later.
Give her a good clean up, also fitted new rubbing strips to front bumper as the heat made the old ones go funny & the glue had come unstuck.
Ill be doing a few bits to it to get it mint before national day, needs a little bit of bodywork sorting as the laquer on o/s arch/sideskirt has been poor since buying so its off to SBS for some tlc in the next few days.

I have always been against expensive paintwork 'detailing' products but i had a few little issues with the paint on the gtt that the usual autoglym super resin polish wouldnt shift.
After reading a few reviews i decided to splash out & bought poorboys black hole show glaze, victoria concours wax & poorboys wheel sealant.
Has transformed the paint, took a lot of graft though!

Now your just showing off:laugh:
Looks great.........:agree: it is worth the effort i think once the bodyworks all polished up!:smokin:
Brigsy, that looks the absoloute nuts mate :agree:
Poorboys ftw!! They should do air fresheners cos all their products smell lush! I was tempted to eat some of the wheel sealant before lol
looking sweet mate, credit to ya!!
That really is a fantastic car mate, A real gem
looks a right oem minter now with the speedlines on :)
Best at show ey ;)
Mmm nice. I know I don't comment much but I read all these resto threads and it's brilliant to see all these OE 5's being brought back from the dead, even if it means I won't win anything;)
More pics! :)
In the first pic, the paint looks so good it's almost as if it's better than the day it came out of the factory. And maybe it is, because the car was probably never treated to any sort of specialist wax/polish/paint products when it was first sold and even if it was, they wouldn't have been a match for modern products.
Cheers all, i personally wouldnt say its mint as it has a few marks here & there, but vgc for a gtt knocking on the door of 20 yr old!
Agreed Trev, the cleaning/polishing products available now compared to even ten years ago are awesome. The car probably only got a quick lash over with the buffer before leaving the factory as new:laugh:
Ok its been a while since I updated this!
Was invited to bruntingthorpe for a photoshoot with other renault hot hatches last november with Redline mag, the feature is in this months copy. Done 0-60 in 6.9 secs & 130mph on the 1.25 mile with the datron timing gear :) Faster 0-60 than the new clio rs200 ;)
I done 3 runs down the 1.25 mile back to back and booted it around the handling course, worryingly when i pulled up the o.e heatshield was smouldering away like a good'en :crap: Cant handle 1bar of boost eh?!
Dug my dslr out for some night shots lastnight in front of the transporter bridge in middlesbrough.

:agree:
Spotted Redline mag in the local shop and purchased it as i saw all the Renaults on the front cover. Pleasantly surprised to see it was Brigsys 5, absolute credit for keeping it so good. Takes me back to my first ever tungy5 back in 1998
Top work :)
Cheers all :) Im still chuffed that i lashed the clio rs200 on 0-60, even on the old uniroyals:D
Long time no update eh!! Has been faultless, only needing regular servicing/cleaning in 2011. Laid it up for winter end of october. Weather seems pretty mild so got her out the garage and give her the first proper run out for 2012 last sat. Covered in dust and needs a clean but apart from that no problems at all :)

Nice car rubbish music.

Engine sounds so sweel as well.. I didnt think it was possible for c1j's to be so quiet :)
I should have put some old skool happy hardcore on for the vid :) if i can get a driver ill bring it to nd this year, didnt do any shows in it last year at all was a shame really.
Possibly up for sale soon. Needs to be used and not stuck in the garage all year round!?

Love it mate :agree: makes mine look shabby!
Love this car, hopefully I will be able to get mine to a similar standard :agree:
Another small update, the battery was fried after being layed up since november. It was getting a bit tired last year but always seemed to start so time to change it. Fitted a new battery today (036 for £30 new, cheap as) it has made a massive difference in starting, starts after a couple of cranks now and the dash lights are so much brighter.
I opened the battery terminals up and fitted them over the poles properly as they weren't on fully before and overtightened (not my doing) and now the oil pressure gauge has started working properly again as it was always reading around 1 bar, the clocks also seem more responsive overall. Could have been due to this, duff battery or co-incidence?? who knows.

Poor earth on the battery could cause issues.
That's what i thought Tony, typically ive never had the earth clamp off the battery since i changed the engine years ago.

Would you miss it if you sold it?
Van for goon, car for show? Mind you having said that both are great.
Gtt has been running superb since last update. 360 miles per tank of fuel!
I have bled the brakes again after pedal was a little spongy and serviced it. Give it some tlc in the stages of clay bar, poorboys black hole, victoria concours wax and dodo juice red mist to finish. Wheels have been treated to poorboys wheel sealant. :)
Beading shot for all you detailers out there

Temperature guage:)
Was that its top speed?
I've never seen pics of your car before Brigsy. It looks in top top top condition! Cracking motor mate.
Very nice indeed fella :)
Cheers all. Ive had 130 on the daytron timing gear at bruntingthorpe a couple of years ago, did three runs back to back, Speedo was saying approx 135?
Cant remember if this was flat out or not in germany, the actuator is a little bit weaker now so less power. It was pretty hot in germany but still barely went above half way on temp.
One of my mates has just been round and he was telling me about a bloke on retro rides from redcar with a standard tungy gtt....... I wonder who that could have been :coffee:
Haha i have been whoring the pics in the last couple of days! He can buy it if he wants:D
Haha i have been whoring the pics in the last couple of days! He can buy it if he wants:D
I will mention it;) he's had an itch for a gtt for a while but he's in the middle of a house refurb and not so sure his Mrs would appreciate a gtt being added to the fleet of cars he already has, and my raider is in his garage, wouldn't want it kicked out in the rain!
Got plans for the old girl this year. Shes been chilling out in the garage since the rr day at efi parts in 2012. Done approx 15 miles last year - mot station (pass) then back home. Its going to get some use this year though;)
