Hi all, Today I have started on the job of stripping my alarm out so i can actually start the car again!:mad: anyway I thought as the car has been stood for the best part of a year that I would check the floor pan for rust, yes you guessed it I found some:disagree:

I would like your opinions on what is the best way to go about repairing/removing the horrid orange stuff!!:crap:

Things like whats the best way to take the rust back? Will it need cutting out? Whats the best rust treatment stuff? and what should I paint it with if/when its repaired?

I'm a metal work virgin hence the :confused:

Personally i don't think its to bad, I have seen a lot worse.

Looks like the std rust on most gtt's mate, Should be fairly straightforward to sort, get the rust chopped out & some new metal in there:)

I know it isn't a massive rust issue I'm just looking for some tips on how to fix it myself as the way my finances are at the moment thats my only option. :wasntme:

Is ther no other option apart from cutting it out?

ku rust and fiberglass? i spose ya best bet is to get a wire brush on it and get it back to metal, and they you can see what is just scabby and what needs replacing

ya might be lucky and just have the small hole... if i didn't have a welder i'd probably be tempted to rust treat it, and use fibreglass to 'plug' it, then lots of underseal underneath

I can get hold of a welder but I have never used one before:scratch: I'm willing to have a go tho:coffee::wasntme:

Get a welder to do it mate, other wise you will look worse than my intercooler.

Could you not POR 15 that etc in car and under neath or is it realy weak

right then young phil , i had the same on mine ,you need a soft pad on a grinder , you will be there all day with a wire bush, bring back to bare metal , treat with kur rust then either use por 15 or underseal it with a tin of paint on underseal or spray stuff , first prime the area with zinc oxide primer , or any type of rust teating primer:)

seriously though, looks like rust is on the top side, has your interior light/sunroof etc been leaking ?

Yes the sunroof was leaking (now sorted) and the sound deadening had got wet and obviously sat there for however long, it was saturated when i pulled it out today:disagree:

Underneath it is fine or seems to be, thats why I was hoping to just take it back to bare metal and treat and paint.

The small hole on the passenger side I don't mind patching up.

One of my sills is on its way at the rear too, hence the reason for having a go at welding.

:agree:the good old por 15,you will never look back mate,go check out
frost restorations.co.uk for the stuff.bearing in mind you may have some
small areas that may still need welding up,the rest can be painted with this
paint an keep the rust at bay.

when ever the area is fixed either welded or not, finnish it off with por 15, it will the never rust again.

you can get it from frost.co.uk and looks like this

I havn't got any pictures of the sill yet my phone camera is pants!

The guy who did the welding for me has done a cracking job and that por 15 paint is the dog's bollocks! a word of warning tho if you do use it wear gloves.

Apparantly I can expect my hands to be like this for 3/4 days minimum but in reality it will probably take 3 weeks or so!:ashamed: I have tryed everything :wasntme: bleach, brake fluid the lot, nothing will shift it!

a mare to get off,like they say only time will
shift it,but is the best paint out there.

LOL all it said on the tin was clean upon contact with skin with thinners/ turps.

All paints say that but they usually come off anyway.:wasntme:
