Tubular Manifolds

I have seen these manifolds going around, they seem to be made by a company called raceline and are all over europe ebay although I see cgb sells em for £169 + P&P.

On europe ebay the cheapest I could find was €159 + €15 postage which is about £150 in total! which is a bargin really compared to the likes of Ktec etc!

So being a bit cheeky I decided to email a few of the sellers and see what they could do for a bulk purchse and the best I got was €1400 delivered for 10 manifolds! :eek:

Thats €140 per manifold or £121 each, the only problem being that he wants to send to one person so they would then need distributing over here which could be done for around £6 so would be £127 in total per manifold!

I dont know if any body has tried these and can say what they are like but they certainly look good in the picture! (To me anyway!)

Havent figured out the finer details of how to pay etc but will get round to that once I get a idea if anybody is interested?

How hard would it be to convert one of these manifolds to twin scroll? As I could be tempted to buy one and get it converted.

oh great :sad2: i've just got one off cgb a week ago on sale for £185 +£12 p&p. thay do look very well made though

i like the manifold. i may be up for getting 1. it would be good to see if any1 has used these before

defo help with spooling , noticed a 300 rpm improvement when fitted over oe item:)

I bought one of these raceland manifolds a while back really good build quality had no bother with mine bit of a chew fitting though getting a spanner in to a couple of nuts easier with the head off. I heat wrapped mine though so it did make it a bit tighter to get into. Oh and I had to do a slght bit of grinding to get it to fit perfect but for the price ya can't go wrong think I paid 120 from them direct

Its defo a good price, Perhaps its something the club can look into getting if there is enough interest...

Glad to see theres lots of interest and would be great if the club could get involved!

thats an awesome price for what you get!
I bought one from CGB last year. £200 all in. The build quality is excellent, it does look mint! cant say that I noticed much of a gain on spool up tho, maybe a 100 or 2 rpm for full boost difference but whats that!
but I did notice that while cruising that there was a much quieter/smoother note from the exhaust....untill the foot goes down:cool2:

The man you want to ask about such a conversion is Big Jim Racing who made those 5GTT big exhaust pipes for after the turbo: http://www.bigjimracing.co.uk/home.html

He actually made those pipes himself, not just got them made.

Anyway, I asked the other year about something for my Fiat and he wouldn't make a manifold for the kind of price being talked about here, ie, £121. Not even for double that.

I think when Looking for a twin scroll turbo for the little GTT an oe turbo from an other car will have to be used. As all the garrett turbos seem to be for over 400hp. So that'll mean looking at using either and Evo, Scooby or Megane turbocharger. But so far I've only found Evo flanges for sale.

Find out which of the four cylinders complement each other, I.e one and four two and three and then divide the collector by welding in a plate, not sure if it would be possible on a manifold that was finished unless your willing to chop the collector off. You may have to rotate the flange also which could not be ideal for turbo placement.

Wow! Chuffed with all the interest in these!

I have some great news as well, I have emailed the the chap again to enquire about larger quanties than 10 as we have smashed 10 now!

This is his response

0-10 manifolds €140 each
10-15 maniollds €130 each
15-20 manifolds €126 each (£109)
20+ manifolds €121 each (£104)

So as the list goes there looking at €130 a manifold!!:eek: (£113) :smokin:

So guess we just need sort out whos collecting the monies to pay for them? Im off on hols on the 12th so dont really want to be dealing with this and then disappearing for 3 weeks leaving everyone in the lurch.
So can i pass the details onto some one who can take the money etc and accept delivery then redistribute them?

would the rtoc shop maybe not buy a number of these, there somthing i imagine would sell on pretty easially at that kind of price.

If the shop can get some in i would have one in a few months, i just cant commit right this moment to that money unfortunately :(

With this many people wanting them the shop should take a non refundable deposit of £30 per member upfront before ordering if they were to do it to save being lumberd with them like the calendars.

It would have to be 100% up front like the Orange dials.

Ian has posted on the CM boards about this .The club is willing to order 20+ units and get the best price but we must have some commitment from those above :agree:

It is a big order but there from a fairly big seller so not to worried. Has a large website and sells world wide! Has a ebay rating of 4500+ and 99.6% positive :agree:

We are waiting on final price and delivery schedule .
What I would like to do is get a sample first to check fit and quality :agree: They look all nice and shiny and the seller is well established but we all know what that can sometimes mean ;) Last thing Matthew and the club wants is for people to be unhappy with the product when it arrives .

If it helps i have an engine sat in my garage, so can fit a manifold straight on and check fitment. I can quite easy bolt up a spare turbo and enlarged downpipe to check clearances too.

Flange is not the flattest I've seen but seems OK at the pipe ,just runs off where the shape is thin .... All the welds look good

Is there much / any seepage going through into the interior, ie, in the gas flow?

That's what was so continuously conspicuously absent from KTec and their customers.

It should be borne in mind that there are two different internal bores of the OE 5GTT manifold. I forget just now which is larger but that may partly account for why some people notice a change when others don't, when the rest of their equipment is similar or the same.

And that OE manifold is really poor at flowing from the gearbox end cylinder. I fed an air line into each inlet of a standard manifold and felt the air flow exiting the turbo end. The far one was best. The near one to the turbo just stalled and didn't exit.

You can re shape it though with not a lot of work, in for back to back dyno results though.

I'd just like to say, in case anyone misunderstands: I'm not a naysayer. I'm the opposite.

My comment suggesting back to back tests was in the hope that this group buy might end up providing some additional and useful insight/information/knowledge for the wider club on this previously contentious subject.

I think, like Ian says, for £120 this is a good punt. If there is a question over the efficacy of the manifold design, the club could always test this sample before placing the big order...

We are testing fit but not function .

Anyway, I'd better butt out of this as I'm not buying one of these manifolds, I was just showing a bit of interest from a club perspective. It should be noted that my original suggestion was aimed at one of the members doing a test once they'd received their manifold. I wasn't trying to muddy any waters or cause problems with this group buy. The idea the club might do it upfront was merely a subsequent idea in response others' comments regarding whether these things have any tuning value.

Maybe the thread should be locked until things have moved forward to save any further misunderstandings.

I Have been using the raceland equal length header for a year now with no problems at all good quality piece of kit :agree: yes the exhaust note does change but its different mine sounds a bit like a rs turbo (quite like it) suppose every ones will be different depending on the rest of there exhaust system

Hi all, received the sample raceland manifold today thanks to clee, will be bolting it up to an engine tomorrow evening and i'll take some pics of it fitted. I'll also get a straight ruler on it before fitment to check for warp on flanges. But to be honest all looks good, it's definetly lighter than the mk1 ktec maifoldand also retains the threaded top holes in turbo flange as per standard manifold.:)

is someone actually going to do a back to best test with these against standard then ?

theres the rolling road day coming up in march.. maybe somebody could do it on that day, get the first run in the morning, then get it swapped and go again in the afternoon

i used to run the ktech mk1 one and i can say that on my car it made my terminal speed at the pod drop by 2mph when i refitted the standard item.. But then thats my engine.. Also noticed spool up was slower to.

I've ordered one as the way i see it, it cant make it any worse and its only 120 quid, got to be better than wasting money on a bass box or chrome crap :)

Any way doeas it really matter? the fact they are so cheap is why the people that have previously said no to them have changed there minds..

At the price they are if they turn out to be detrimental people have only lost a cheeky 120... not the 4 to 5 hundred ktec and the likes wanted....

for them to be tested it will have to be on every different stage of engine to guage if its good or not as every engine is different.

If i was at the stage of doing my engine i would probably get one for the price, as it stands i'm still sorting out the body work.

I think alot of people look at it from a bhp/£, so to spend £400+ for 1-5bhp? gain at best is 1 bhp/£100

spend £120 for 1-5 bhp? gain at best is 1bhp/£17ish

that's why alot of people have the opinion that they're a waste of money and time but now it makes more sense as the real power gains have been done, ie bigger turbo, better fueling, less restrictive exhaust as that's where you'd spend the money if you had £500 to spend on performance mods

When did RTOC become so political? I mean really who cares that much if so and so said tubular manifolds suck then goes out buy one at a bargain price.

I'm pretty sure everyone has spent 100 odd notes on worse things, all in all worst case scenario you end up with a big shiny doorstop :cartman:

That's not what your strategy was when deciding to buy/fit a cone filter, chromed rocker cover and ally header tank. All of which either provide no added value or are actually detrimental. :disagree:

I'd like to know from those who're nay-saying on here, exactly what their point is. Are you trying to be altruistic and your intention is to dissuade these guys from what you believe is them wasting their money? As far as I can see that's the only half-decent reason. If that is the case, then most here are going about it in a very insensitive and cack-handed fashion. Rubbish :dearme:

Maybe its best get this thread back onto topic. I was in no way putting this deal down i thinks its good the club is doing group buys and i would love these to make an improvement over standard. I dont think grant is putting the deal down either everyone is entitled to an opinion.

Right been tinkering in the garage with the new manifold. Firstly checked the faces of the turbo flange and manifold flange with a straight edge. Turbo flange flat around the center bore but with run off where the mounting holes are probably due to over deburring with grinder. Manifold flange flat across the bores again, very slight step (less then 1mm) when measuring out from inner bores to the outer ones but should pull up when bolted to the head.
As for fitment no problems, no filing or metal removed at all, just a good wiggle of inlet when both pushed on to head studs. Both inlet and exhaust manifold flat on the head without any nuts to pull it up. All so a bonus the inlet mounting flange and exhaust mounting flange are the same thickness unlike the KTEC one that i have.
Right just for tonight tried a standard T2 turbo on the manifold with a 2.5 inch crossover pipe and no issues to report. Compared the turbo mounting angle to a standard manifold on another head and really can't make out any differences. Even crossover pipe seems to be in the correct position in relation to inlet manifold.
Will try a bigger turbo and different crossover pipe monday night and post more pics.

Well may have a starter heat shield in the loft but you have to remind me what it looks like. Haven't had one on any of me cars for a while and lots of bits in the loft.

Shiny if new, squarish and curved down the middle to fit around the shape of the round starter. Maybe 12 inches by maybe 10". IIFC, two bolt holes.

Just an update on the manifold fitment, as requested i have found a phase 1 large starter motor and can confirm that it fits straight on the back of the engine with approx half an inch clearance to nearest exhaust pipe.
I'm still unsure to what the starter heat shield looks like as the pile of brackets/guards of me old phase 1's are numerous. If anyone has a pic of one then i have an idea.

Clee, what do we need to do for the 10 year warranty, is the sticker on the manifold the proof of purchase?

Often these eBay sellers just use the same fulfilment agent as each other.

The club has had subsidised this a little . Price delivered is actually 125 euro each ,I did try and haggle a bit on 30 but got a fairly firm no :laugh:
I can however get the shipping costs down quite a bit if we use a different courier so we are only down about 60p a unit .This does not take into account the fact that we had to pay a bit more for the one off sample as well at 150 euro .

Anyway ....if anybody is local to me or is passing by and can collect and is generous enough to waive the delivery they paid I will reward with free T-shirt ;)

Fitted mine the other day whilst I had the engine out, went on like a glove :). If he's got the head off, he should have no problem fitting it, maybe he's doesn't want to fit it because it's quite different to the OE one, some mechanics are funny like that. :scratch:

They are a real good fit, only worry I think would be for those running large hybrid turbo,may need the turbo supporting due to weight. Other than that can't see any issues.

it fits but test fit it first as if you've got longer manifold studs you'r gonna have problems like i did.

also 1 nut left to fit but i dont have monkey hands and cant get to it.

would be easy with the engine out and starter off and all the rest of it in the cars its a little tight to get to everything. but do-able :)

Could it be that matts 5 is too low at the front so the drive shaft angle is diffent and that's why it catches.

i was under the car today with carcrash, it does seem like there may be an issue when using the boris pipe as it has no adjustment.. i forgot to take my sidey over to test it but my ar5e is twitching a little about it.. i might Vband my boris or mock fit my engine, manifold, boris and sidey and see what i have.. i might have the flange on the manifold cut off and turned a degree or 2 as it'll make a fecking huge difference..

has anyone else used the boris with theres yet and what exhausts? any other issues or is it all gravy baby..:cool:

O dear, seems to be a problem with the larger exhaust's.. I test fitted mine and it fails :cry: I have a custom made jobie on mine, with a slip joint, it's hitting on the bend as it goes under the car!

Anyway for me it's just an excuse to make up a new exhaust system with the BMS downpipe I have yet yo fit :D

Just to add, I would of thought the fanimolds should of kept everything in the same position??? I no my K-tech 1 did...

i had the same manifold fitted to my car with a 2 1/2 big jim racing downpipe fitted with no problems.boris downpipe must be wrong angle anyway what do know:D

As i said previously, it does'nt really bother me as I was going to make a new exhaust anyway.. Was only letting people know to not expect it to be a straight fit :D
As you quite rightly say, they are only £130 which is not a lot of money at all.

Just so im clear before mine gets fitted will me standard shape but 2.5" enlarged elbow fit, i do have a big jim one i take it thats going to FAIL.

the big jim might be at a slightly different angle but might fail, any ktec etc enlarged downpipe using the standard turbo elbow allowing it to swing will be fine:)

you can get a v band from ebay at £30 or so and then welded up sorting any issue out.. if you know someone that can your downpipe to spec your winning..

No heat soak yet but we should be using heatshields. Check the manifolds flange to the turbo, It may need flatted off before fitting or you may get a blow before the turbo losing power.

I had the same problem with the gaytec Mk1 type it was literally against the starter and even with shield made no difference took it off not long after putting it on:D

Just thought id mention, with no heatshield and tubular fitted, i didnt have one starter problem after a 120mile trip to mallory, 30-40miles on track and 120 back. I would advise taking your starter off when fitting (to make fitting easier too) but also spraying wd40 inside, plenty of it. inside the motor and the solenoid. I did prior to doing this suffer with hot start sticking solenoid on my standard manifold.

Yeah they fit mate, i had a tubular manifold fitted to tungy 5 with a Big Jim downpipe

how exactly do these v bands work, any pics.. i presume u chop the 2.5 boris downpipe, weld these flanges in , then use the clamp to tighten, does this allow you to alter the angle of the eghaust slightly ? any pics ?

what i had done to mine to fit without it hitting driveshaft!

ah right i see, so you weld the two v clamps with a slight angle, coolio, well ill attempt to fit mine first without this modification, then if needed ill fit a V band.

If they'll post to the UK for £130 delivered that's as good as you'll get at that's the same price we we're selling them to members. Basically, slightly above our cost price.

Mine improved without any doubt, reved much much more easily, It did change the sound too which i like but some may not, i wish i had some practical figures but unfortunately i dont. You wont be disapointed IMO but i also wouldnt say its worth spending £hundereds£ on.

It was a while ago, but I think I used 2 :scratch: rolls of the heatwrap cgb sell.

always good to have extra though so you can wrap your downpipe or exhaust as well.

tip: wear gloves of some sort when wrapping as it gets rather itchy:laugh:

i wouldn't.. people have killed standard manifolds wrapping them, im pretty sure it would be easier to warp and crack one of these if the heat can't escape..

Although Pascal had an issue with his welds, stainless is alot better at heat cycling and therefore should handle the wrap just fine.

Keeping the heat, and therefore energy, in is a good thing for performance. ;)
