Valeo clutch.! issue or not.??

for the record this isnt the first valeo[greenbox] clutch ive fitted to a 5.


my problem[maynot be a prob?] is that the valeo clutch ive fitted to my current 5 seems to feel different:scratch: yes i know that these clutchs are kinda pedal springy but this one feels different!

when lifting the clutch pedal to engage a gear, i get no bite AT ALL until the pedal is half way up, when it does bite at half way it feels like the car wants to launch off! i cannot get the car to pull off slow and smooth as when the clutch bites at half way it springs up VERY quick.

take note that ive not actually done any miles on this clutch, ive only been back and forward a few times.

You saying about it biting half way up, not anything to do with the ratchet is it?

how can i tell if its anything to do with the ratchet.? ive depressed the clutch pedal a fair few times so would this not take up the slack from the clutch cable which is also new? is there a certain procedure to adjusting the ratchet?

Raj i seem to remember you saying something about this time was without a softpedal conversion for the box? That would make it feel VERY different! If you didnt say that then i am sorry and i will go and hide in my box :crap:

ill just have to give the ratchet another check, is there any particular routine to checking the ratchet? maybe the clutch cable? although there is no slack in the cable.

You need to remove the stop block, seperate the two ratched quadrants by pulling the hinje of the black one upwards, pull the pedal right up, release and let it self adjust. Replace the block. If that doesn't work, push pedal down and let it release shaply, almost as if your foot has slipped off the pedal.

Sounds like the clutch is going over center, mine used to do that. So did my cortina with the AP clutch. It will soften, just keep using it.
These Clutches are always agressive when new.

stop block:scratch: wheres that.? is it on top of the clutch pedal towards the top?

Ive got a valeo clutch fitted and im still running my engine ive noticed mine is very simular to yours, when clutch is relesed and the car is moving its fine, Just seems to be a bit jerky pulling off and it as a really sharp biting point.

May soften up in time will keep you posted:cool:

Its a brown block clipped into the pedal frame. It stops the pedal traveling too far up and not over adjusting the cable tension.

I feel I have the same issue. But mine already done 20.000kms.
I'm not able to start a really good with my car. :(

i cant tell if theres any improvement yet as the car is in the garage.
i'll be getting it out on the road soon, this clutch hasnt even done 1 mile yet:scared:

Anybody els had a similar issue with a Valeo clutch?
Could the 'soft pedal conversion' be a solution?

The valeo green box clutches always have the aggressive bite with the o.e arm, almost like a paddle. No idea if the soft clutch conversion makes them feel any better though, i imagine the bite will still be as snappy.

i've had about 5 so far i think, they all feel the same, a bit 'poppy' when on the bite, something you get used too, plus its funny watching people try and drive off in your car and stall it

I've got a green-box clutch in my Raider with the soft pedal conversion & the action is lovely & smooth and progressive! ;)

tis exactly what i keep doing:ashamed: althought o be fair ive not had it out on the road yet but only back and forth in and out the garage:D stall it out and stall it back in:crap:

By normal driving I do not have any problem with it.
Only when I try to make a good start for a 0-100 measurement.
Either I give too much accelerate and the wheels are just spinning and the car won't move, or if I try it with less than it starts fine but right after the start I have a little lag. And I'm loseing at least half a sec. I feel I have to slipp the clucth a bit but as it has quite a hard bite I'm not able.

That just sounds like the typical gtt launch on road tyres, either wheelspin or bog down. Practise is the key?

to be honest this doesnt feel right at all:scratch: nothing like my previous valeo clutches.

ive just had another quick look at it and ive noticed something...

the clutch pedal itself is REALLY high up! high enough for me to having to put my leg to the side of the steering wheel to put my foot on it.! now that is definatly not normal,never had that issue before.

the clutch pedal is ALOT higher than the brake and accelerator pedals which are more or less inline with each other.

ive been faffing about with the self adjuster, i can tell its adjusting its self as i hear it click a few times!

abit lost now:confused:

If the pedal is higher that the rest the plastic block that stops it is missing.

plastic block? if i look at the pedal travelling back up,it only stops once it gets to the fixed metal pedal part if yu get me?

heres a few pics, note that it clicks all the way up to this point and at the engine end the cable will not go over the clutch arm,its about an inch too short -

But I do not feel this problem so much when I'm driving any other GTTs.
And as I remember I haven't had it with my previous clutch.
I thought it would be better after several kms. But not. :sad2:

Anyway I have ordered the necessary parts for the soft pedal conv. Hope it could help.

raj, what is on the 'fork' end of the cable, do ya have any of the spacers or just the cable end hooked over? looks like the cable is too short, pulling it up

it also looks like there is no pedal stop at all...

this is a pic of the fork end, im pulling on it to show you how much is left for it to go over the fork, the clutch pedal is as in the above pics position,
there no spacer as such, just whats part of the cable.

The plastic block/pedal stop clips onto the metal above the clutch pedal. Its definately missing in your pic.

just put the metal end on, leave the rubber bit the other side of the fork, i've never had a 5 that needed the rubber bit as well as the end bit

but surely that isnt right?? if i just put the first metal bit on it wont sit properly will it? i mean its not made to sit in the groove without the rubber bit and the last shaped metal bit is it?
still.. i want to see a pic of this bump stop that i seem to be missing..?

any local members willing to pop over one day? i just want to know if its just me not being used to the clutch or if it is DEFINATLY clutch related!, id like to compare it to another 5 with the same clutch.

must have been along time since i drove a 5 as im finding it REALLY uncomfortable now:crap: the steering wheel you could say is sat on my knees and the gearstick seems to be rubbing my leg up like a horny dog. :rolleyes:

its always under tension so never comes loose...

my raider is outside, give me 5 mins and i'll try and get a pic or two....

Raj, get the block put in as suggested before condeming anything else. Once the self adjust has done its bit the pedal will feel more 'normal'. It will still be springy and still bite harshly but it shouldn't be a long pedal travel.

I would try and explain on a cheat method to get the pedal to not bite as harsh, but i think it would melt your face off!!!:D

here ya go raj, took this from the angle of the footwell vent from the centre console if that makes sense... the clutch stop is the white bit :agree:

awesome, just looked at the pic and noticed that the clip on the end of the spindle bit is on incorrectly.... yet another thing to sort on the raider :disagree:

just fitted a new bump stop courtesy of phase i 16v turbo:agree:

i havent driven the car yet but what i can say is that the nasty clutch pedal spring back feeling has been illiminated:agree: it now feel smooth push down on the pedal aswell as bringing it back up:)
