4 pot calipers, Clio 172
Sitting here thinking of sorting the Clio throughout this year, looking at going to Nurburgring end of April and on the September outing. I'd like to do a back to back lap at the ring without worrying about overcooking the brakes, the engine is fine, std and happy with that.
Brakes, i have the Brembo 'Max' discs and Ferodo DS2500 pads up front and oe rears. I have braided brake hoses to fit as well.
Is it worth me 'upgrading' to 4 pot calipers?
Can i just purchase the calipers or do i have to shell out for a kit?
My brakes are ok for UK trackdays albeit a change of brake fluid might be worth doing but i'm thinking of prolonged high speed braking on the Ring.

Re: 4 pot calipers, Clio 172
calipers won't change whether or not you cook things, ducts and DS3000+ or similar circuit pads is what you want. I don't consider DS2500 to be a circuit pad.
-
Re: 4 pot calipers, Clio 172
Cheers Andy, i have the DS2500 as i'm on the road more than track. So would you think i should purchase a DS3000 type pad and fit before going to the Ring? DS3000 no good for road use?

DS3000+ will ruin your paint....
That's assuming you have a problem with heat, I'd duct some air in first, there are plenty of long straights to cool things down.

Re: 4 pot calipers, Clio 172
I imagine back in the day (2000) the Clio cup cars used OE discs and race pads with ducts?
Would Sam Fish know?

not sure whether the disks (7711155586) are OE, but they are OE size and shape. Standard calipers, race pads and ducts.
pads:
Pagid Grey
Pagid Blue
Ferrodo DS3000
Ferrodo DS1.11
Mintex M1177

Aah thanks again Andy :) :agree:
Just need to source some ducts hopefully retaining the OE phase 1 plastic foglight covers. I think Adey used ducts but don't think he ran piping behind them.

the 5's did the same. the guy that made the ducts never made them angle towards the disc so they were a waste of money as you couldnt even secure a hose on them. shame the police dont use renaults as alot of the vauxhalls have off the shelf ducts that connect to the wishbones.

Early 16v Clio's had ducts on the lower arms.....dunno if they worked though.
-
Re: 4 pot calipers, Clio 172
apart from getting the front ducts to fit flush like those ones shown, the rest of the kit is easy to copy and fit and that hose is available off the shelf in differant heat grades.
make sure it doesnt come loose and go under your wheel as you will rip a nice hole in the bumper as it tears the duct out

Re: 4 pot calipers, Clio 172
Im sure that setup could be made for pennies with a bit of pmt. Butcher a set of spotlights to make the ducts or a bit of alloy sheet chopped & formed etc :D

that should be cheaper. i used the black stuff. was very good and only crushed when i ran it over. its wire reinforced.

Re: 4 pot calipers, Clio 172
the hose has cold air belting through it and it doesnt actually touch the disc so i dont see the point in the higher rating unless its being routed over exhausts etc.

:agree:
Well at least PMT ducts, hosing and better pads is cheaper than 4 pot calipers :ashamed: :D

indeed it is, im still struggling to get some on my 13's. im getting there but its quite pricey. try to get the ducts to sit in the center of the disc at the top of the caliper so it blows the air in the vent in the disc and cools equally, if it blows on one side you will have a cold and hot side.
edit.
i think i recall the hose needing to go on the inside of the disc in the middle so it blows cold air from the middle of the disc and out the vents.

Re: 4 pot calipers, Clio 172
If the disc is rotating, the enitre disc will be getting venting as it moves round anyway...so the whole disc will be cooled as supposed to the one area like your saying Marc...:crap:...:D

not if the hose is blowing air directly on the face of one side of the disc. thats what i meant

Something different, could put the white intakes in the front bumper down the bottom (meshed front)
-
Re: 4 pot calipers, Clio 172
I wonder where you can get the bracket that the duct goes onto right next to the disc?

Re: 4 pot calipers, Clio 172
Looks like a modified splash guard...Im sure you could fabricate something similar to that using some ally sheet :)

That was a good disc/pad combo you had on your 172, deffo gonna rig up some ducting too. Out of interest where did you get the alloy trumpets from that were in your foglight surrounds?

Gives you an idea of what they look like, wasn't it Markey B looking into carbon fog intakes?
Just measure the aperture where the black plastic foglight surround is then see if there's a duct a similar size
