11 years later silver bullet comes home
As a few will remember I had the pleasure of owning this car back in 2005 and sold during the incarnation of the vag powered black 5......
.....11 years on Chris gave me the opportunity to buy back and talked myself into its just a bit of welding and lick of paint, bit of tlc and get using it
How I left it :)

I sold the car 17/7/2007 returning on the 31/8/2017 so actually 10 years apart not 11 :p - dam should have noted this and collected 10 years to the day just to be sad lol
Previous pics of donor car as you cant buy the screen cradle anymore

Re: 11 years later silver bullet comes home
Ian feel I have aged as well as the car lol
I will start a different thread covering the mad 5 aka scoff original rwd 5 that has gone through a few developments with Matt volvo conversion and ended up buying off the mighty James5 with unfinished 1.8 20vt in the back.....
.......roll on life with 3 young boys and rolled into a 40th present of new rs3 engine and dsg box to go in the car :cooter:

Re: 11 years later silver bullet comes home
That will do with pics for now :)
Chris Hebden had given sme feedback captured below :)
Regarding engine, it was fully re-built approx 1000miles before it finally came off of the road. Recon crank, new pistons and liners (standard), recon head (managed to find one not skimmed) and new valves ground in. New push-rods also fitted. Existing stronger valve springs and high lift cam went back in. Turbo was rebuilt by Adam L at the time and the carb was set up to run 16psi by @Markey Mark BD. In car boost controller was disconnected. New engine mounts were also fitted. Carb was also striped and re-built with an RTOC kit. Converted from water cooled to air cooled prior to this as the pump gave up
Gearbox was fully re-built at the same time by Mr Bean AKA Pete with brand new synchros and new clutch
Wheels were powder coated at some point, can't remember when
Bad bits i can remember - sills (inner and outer), jacking points, bumper mounts (front and rear) all need welding. OS door, front bumper and window surround needs replacing. I thought the boot be saved. Brakes need a total refurb, i always wanted to replace them as the Hi-Spec discs never sat right with me as they are Lancia discs made to fit, although stopped great! Rear calipers were replaced in 2010 i think and had little mileage (with discs, pads and new bearings)
Red donor car had more that could be taken but at the time taking up limited space and thought not point steeling other bits....well I thought lol - G388 BBX will live on through the eyes of silver bullet :ce:
Ordered a few bits of RTOC and tonight some bumper point repair parts :)
Have been tempted t stick he 20vt out of the blue rwd 5 but staying true to the cause and original spec to come back :)

Re: 11 years later silver bullet comes home
Great to see you going for it again in another 5 and the eldest at an age where he might help out now. God where did that previous owner keep it? What a shame he let it deteriorate like that. Why did he buy in 07 and then leave it outside since 2010 maybe? Is this to be a track weapon when done?

Re: 11 years later silver bullet comes home
In fairness to the previous owner it was a car used daily all year round and unfortunatly just got to a point where the reapir work took it off the road and did not have a garage to rest in for a while
The hard bit atm is not going tooo far to a perfect finish as it will be a car used and may never get finished lol
So bit more stripping required (of the car lol) and get metal work respolved and spray. Then focus on refurb of all other parts before embarking on the final back together build

Re: 11 years later silver bullet comes home
Be good to see another back on the road. Not too many silver ones left either.
I'm going full bore with my white five shortly. It's in a right mess but just can't scrap it!😢

Re: 11 years later silver bullet comes home
I have parked the crazy idea's of engine swaps and option of colour change as the car has brilliant provence, backed up with all the right paper work so seems original oem silver it is with stickers also. And I have history with the car
Will stalk all on here for some advice on a few engine setup as it is a looong time since tinkering with the c1j ;)

For the long serving members may recognise the faces but for the record is the ONLY pictures of the mighty James Surridge doing work on a Renault 5 in existence :cooter:
He is in the middle and extra hair may be confusing more recent members

Re: 11 years later silver bullet comes home
Nice to see a once great looking 5 being rescued and brought back to life.
Having history with the car is the really interesting part of this project, it will add to your determination to plow on and get it done - Good luck and keep the pics coming :D

Re: 11 years later silver bullet comes home
Car had fantastic history when I originally purchased the car from the slip when it left the factory, mots and receipts gallor. Also all the original books and spare key / fob etc....you get the idea and Chris kept this going with receipts also :agree:

Re: 11 years later silver bullet comes home
Some metal repair parts turned up from NL in the form of rear bunper repair items and front bumper brackets. Saves time and pain of making
Cant seem to add pics atm but sure most know what they look like
